Clinical Nurse Consultant/Specialist

Purpose of Position

The Clinical Nurse/ Midwifery Consultant coordinates and delivers high quality nursing care to patients/clients of the Clarence Health Service at an advanced level and in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) National Competency Standards for Registered Nurses/ Registered Midwives and the Policies and Procedures of the MoH and NNSWLHD. See link: NMB Codes and Guidelines   Provides direct clinical services, information and education for people with diabetes in the Clarence health Service. Takes a leadership role in the clinical and operational coordination of diabetes services in the Clarence 9 this may include rostering, organising clinical service provision and integration of other clinical services into the diabetes service and liaison with facility managers). Implementing and contributing to National, State and Regional diabetes policies, standards and priorities. Providing information and advice to other health services related to diabetes within the Clarence Health Service. Developing and providing quality service delivery, in consultation with the relevant professional bodies, supervisors and committees. Be available as a consultant in the Clarence Health Service and the LHD regarding Diabetes Education & Management.   See below for award criteria for CNC/CMC 1, 2 and 3.   Public Health System Nurses’ and Midwives’ (State) Award  criteria for CNC/ CMC The Clinical Nurse/Midwifery Consultant is a Registered Nurse/Midwife who has a high level of clinical knowledge and understanding in relation to a specific specialty area.   Clinical Nurse/Midwifery Consultants are employed as Grade 1, 2 or 3 according to the criteria outlined below, and in line with the NSW Public Health System Nurses’ and Midwives’ (State) Award.   Clinical Nurse/Midwifery Consultant Grade 1 means: a registered nurse/midwife appointed as such to a position approved by the Health Service, who has at least 5 years’ full time equivalent post registration experience, and in addition who has approved post registration nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed, or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service.    Clinical Nurse/Midwifery Consultant Grade 2 means:  a registered nurse/midwife appointed as such to a position approved by the Health Service, who has at least 5 years’ full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years’ full time equivalent experience in the specialty field.  In addition, the employee must have approved post graduate nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed to or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service.  An employer may also require a higher qualification in the specialist nursing field where such qualification is considered essential for the performance of the individual position.   Clinical Nurse/Midwifery Consultant Grade 3 means:  a registered nurse/midwife appointed as such to a position approved by the public hospital or public health organisation, who has at least 7 years’ full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 5 years’ full time equivalent experience in the specialty field.  In addition, the employee must have approved post graduate nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service.  An employer may also require a higher qualification in the specialist nursing field where such qualification is considered essential for the performance of the individual position.

Selection Criteria

Registered Nurse/ Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner’s Regulation Agency (APHRA) who is currently credentialed by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association with a minimum of 5 years’ full time equivalent post registration experience and at least 3 years’ full time equivalent experience in Diabetes Education and Management with Post Graduate Diabetes qualifications.

Proven clinical expertise and leadership skills in diabetes management and education and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework demonstrating a commitment to excellence in nursing practice.

Proven ability to apply clinical expertise in client-centred consultancy and work effectively both autonomously and as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.

Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence based research.

Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and people from government and non-government agencies.

Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching and coaching, competency in the use of contemporary information systems and experience in the development of specialty education programs.

Current unencumbered drivers licence valid to drive in NSW.
