About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Behavioural Escalation Support Team (BEST) at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The primary purpose of this position is to deliver care, collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and act as a liaison and clinical resource for patients admitted to acute care facilities with Acute Behavioural Disturbance. The BEST will operate as a 24/7 clinical team, designed to collaborate with clinicians and serve as a liaison, consult and clinical resource for all staff in acute care facilities. BEST clinicians are expected to work across a seven day rotating roster, including morning, evening and night shifts. The BEST will be available to rapidly respond to patients in emergent behavioural situations or to sit with patients of concern for considerable periods to deescalate ASBD or to implement behaviour management strategies. BEST members will have the necessary experience and skillset to recognise and respond to the antecedents of acute severe behavioural disturbance and will receive the appropriate training as required. There will also be an opportunity to receive a scholarship for the completion of a Graduate Diploma in the assessment and management of challenging behaviours (currently in development). The BEST will operate in close partnership with existing clinical services, liaison services and the hospital’s support services.

We are looking for someone who has

  • A Bachelor or post graduate degree in Nursing and have a current registration with AHPRA to practice.
  • Qualifications as above, knowledge and experience working with patients exhibiting challenging behaviours and acute severe behavioural disturbance.
  • The ability to participate in a seven day roster (Monday-Sunday) with 12 hour shifts and no night shifts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving quality of life for people who present with Acute Severe Behavioural Disturbances.

About working for SLHD

This is a Category A position. To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy (PD2023_022).


All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course (2 doses) of a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine (except for the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine which is approved by the TGA as a single dose primary course). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW. A NSW Health agency may require further information about the medical contraindication (including but not limited to an Immunisation Medical Exemption form - IM011 form).​

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
