Paediatric Surgery is the surgical specialty concerned with providing surgical and medical care and treatment to paediatric patients, including neo nates, newborns, infants, children, and adolescents. It studies the embryology, anatomy, and pathophysiology of the fetus, infant, child and adolescent, including the organs, systems and conditions involved, and their structure and development. It incorporates knowledge of paediatric neonatology and anaesthesia and is mindful of pathophysiological disturbances related to children with surgical conditions. Paediatric surgery involves principles of surgical practice, including infection control, safety in the operating theatre, ethics, communication with families, and rehabilitation after surgery. Surgical procedures include elective and emergency procedures. They are performed for neonatal conditions, including correction and management of birth defects, trauma and burns, urological conditions, cancer, and other conditions and injuries affecting the abdomen, abdominal wall, genitalia, thoracic region, head and neck, skin and extremities. Paediatric surgeries include repair of umbilical hernia, circumcision, ear tube placement, oncological surgery, appendix removal, and management of trauma. Paediatric surgery is practiced in hospitals and private clinics. Services are provided by multi-disciplinary teams and include inpatient and acute emergency management, outpatient consultation and pre-, peri and post-operative care and rehabilitation.

Paediatric Surgeons perform surgery on children, including infants, neonates and adolescents. These specialists provide emergency and neonatal surgical care for paediatric conditions including trauma or congenital malformations. They often liaise with many medical specialists and paediatricians to ensure the best care for their developing patients. Pediatric surgery is a large field, and many surgeons specialise in an area such as paediatric oncology or paediatric neurology. They perform both elective and vital surgeries and practice in hospitals and private clinics in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Common paediatric surgeries include appendix removal, circumcision, and repair of umbilical hernias. Paediatric Surgeons provide clinical and surgical oversight and lead surgical teams. They train registrars and are involved in other education, research, professional development and management activities. To pursue a career as a Paediatric Surgeon, registered doctors in their PGY3 or higher can apply to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) to undertake their Surgical Education and Training (SET) program in Paediatric Surgery. This program takes 5-6 or more years to complete and leads to Fellowship and Specialist registration with Aphra.

They work in a range of primary, secondary, tertiary, clinical, laboratory and acute care settings, in hospitals, private practices and community clinics. Registrars who want to pursue a career in Paediatric Surgery can undertake advanced training with RACS. They work under paediatric surgeons and develop procedural skills, surgical techniques, clinical expertise, and valuable work experience in the surgical and non-surgical management of paediatric patients.
