About the Opportunity
We are excited to be recruiting to an Aboriginal Peer Support Worker to join our team of Towards Zero Suicides (TZS) Suicide Prevention Peer Support Workers (PSW) which is a completely NEW way of providing care in our community.

The Aboriginal Peer Support Worker will utilise their lived experiences to support Aboriginal people and communities to access Mental Health services across South Western Sydney Local Health District, as well as support the broader team to deliver culturally responsive care. This is an opportunity to be innovative in the way health services are provided.

The Macarthur and Liverpool areas will each have the following two services:

1.TZS Safe Haven

2.TZS Suicide Prevention Outreach Service (SPOT)

SWSLHD is recruiting staff to work in both of our services in Liverpool and Campbelltown.The other members of the team include the TZS Team Leader, Mental Health Clinicians and Senior Suicide Prevention Peer Support Workers.

There is also opportunity to receive additional penalty rates for Saturday, Sunday and evening shifts (typically 11:30am - 8pm, Fri - Mon)

SWSLHDoperates it’s services on the lands of the Dharawal, Darug and Gundungurra people andhas a rich history of working alongside local Aboriginal communities and our districts Aboriginal Health Unit. We are a district that is committed to supporting you grow and develop your skills. Our Mental Health Service has a large and well-supported team of Aboriginal Mental Health workers who are led by an Aboriginal Mental Health Coordinator. You will be provided with cultural supervision, participate in cultural strengths mapping and form part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce.

What You'll be Doing
The Aboriginal Peer Support Worker will utilise their lived experiences to support Aboriginal consumers accessing South Western Sydney Local Health District TZS Mental Health services to support the delivery of culturally responsive care.

Provide recovery orientated, evidence based peer support interventions to mental health consumers within a multidisciplinary team framework. This position also supports clinical staff in the provision of recovery orientated and consumer driven clinical practice by providing consultation in relation to the experience of living with a mental health disorder. The Peer Worker is also responsible for undertaking designated administrative tasks necessary to support service delivery.

How to Apply
To be considered for this position, please ensure you address the selection criteria as thoroughly as possible.

  1. Describe how your lived experience as an Aboriginal person can be utilised to support Aboriginal Mental Health consumers in their recovery.
  2. Detail your experience in planning, delivering, and evaluating group and individual interventions.
  3. Have you completed a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work? If not, are you willing to undertake the course?
  4. Must possess a valid Australian Drivers Licence (excluding learner driver's licences). If not already in possession, a NSW Drivers Licence must be obtained within 3 months of appointment.
