POSITION OVERVIEW

The Department of Neurology at Canberra Hospital is a well-established service with consultant medical staff positions supported by three accredited Neurology Advanced Trainees, in addition to Basic Physician Trainees, Junior Medial Officers, specialist nurses, and neurophysiology scientists.

The neurology department provides inpatient and outpatient services to the ACT and surrounding region. It is level 6 acute stroke centre providing 24/7 endovascular clot retrieval (ECR) service to the region. The department manages approximately 2,300 in-patient admissions annually, with a dedicated ward, and an acute stroke unit. The neurology outpatient service provides up to 3,800 episodes of care annually in general neurology and sub-speciality areas of neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis, Movement Disorders, Botulinum Toxin, and clinical neurophysiology. There is a close working relationship with Neurosurgery, Radiology, General Medicine, Cardiology, the Acute Medical Unit, and North Canberra Hospital.

The successful candidate will contribute to the neurology service by undertaking care of patients under the supervision of the neurologists in the department. The successful candidate will contribute to the in-hours and out-of-hours on-call roster for neurology and stroke, inpatient neurology consultations and supporting general and specialty neurology clinics depending on service needs.

Along with the clinical duties, there are regular educational events and clinical meetings in which the registrar will be expected to participate.

Please note: Candidates who have completed Basic Physician Training exams, but not yet commenced advanced training will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

DUTIES

Under limited direction of the Clinical Director, and under supervision of the neurology consultants, you will:

· Provide care to neurology and stroke inpatients, providing neurological consultations to patients admitted under other teams.

· Participate in day time and after-hours neurology/ stroke on-call roster under consultant supervision.

· Participate in outpatient clinics under the supervision of consultant neurologists to provide a referral service for GPs and other medical practitioners and provide appropriate continuity of care for discharged patients.

· Liaise with all members of the clinical team to maximise patient care and outcome. Promote high quality, customer service principles, practices and attributes.

· Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

· Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

· Postgraduate year four, or above, and previous experience or training in a hospital-based internal medicine training program and/or neurology training program.

· Ideally, successful completion of the FRACP part 1 and part 2 examinations (or equivalent) and in the final years of advanced training for the fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) with the intention to obtain sub-speciality training/qualifications in neurology and/or stroke.

· The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work.

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

· Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

· Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under theWorking with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011is required.

· Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

· Comply with Canberra Health Services Credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for medical professionals.

WHAT YOU REQUIRE

These are the key selection criteria on which you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience:

1. Experience in the practice of general medicine and preferably in neurology, with at least one year of experience as a basic physician trainee in general medicine.

2. Completion of one or two years of advanced training in neurology would be required to be eligible for sub-speciality fellowship training.

3. Sound knowledge of evidence-based medical practice in Neurology.

4. Excellent communication (verbal and written) with patients, their families, medical and non-medical colleagues with the ability to provide empathetic and expert clinical care.

5. Demonstrated commitment to Advanced Training education, research, teaching and continuous quality improvement.

6. Demonstrates a commitment to work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Demonstrated behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
