POSITION OVERVIEW

Applications are sought for trainees to commence training from 5 August 2024.

The Canberra Hospital is its principal location. It is a modern 600 bed hospital and the major tertiary teaching hospital for the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding NSW region serving a population of 0.5 million. The annual caseload is over 19,000.

Canberra Health Services have positions for 24 Registrars and 4 Senior Registrars/Provisional Fellows. The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management at Canberra Health Services provide a comprehensive range of clinical anaesthesia services for most surgical specialties including cardiothoracic-, neuro- and paediatric surgery along with an active preadmission clinic, and an acute and chronic pain management service.


The hospital has 13 operating theatres (including a dedicated MRI neuroanaesthesia suite) and a 31 bed intensive care unit. The new clinical services building is due to open in August 2024 and contains new operating theatres. In addition, the Department of Anaesthesia meets a number of out-of-areas requirements for general anaesthesia or sedation.

Calvary Public Hospital is accredited for 6 Registrars and is the other local hospital included in the training rotation. It is a modern healthcare service complex comprising a 174 bed public district general hospital.

Both hospitals are teaching hospitals of the Australian National University (ANU) Medical School and have strong research links to the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the ANU as well as to the University of Canberra.

Albury Base Hospital and Wagga Wagga Base Hospital are the other hospitals participating in the Canberra Region Rotation Registrar Training Program. Both hospitals provide acute and community health care services.

DUTIES

Under limited direction of the unit director you will:

  1. Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of the Health Directorate under the supervision and direction of the Consultant Medical Practitioner;
  2. Participate in the ANZCA training program and ensure progression though the training scheme as appropriate. This includes satisfactory preparation and success at the examinations and acquiring both technical and non-technical professional skills desirable for a career in anaesthesia;
  3. Contribute to clinical audit and research and participate in changes that improve the quality and safety of patient care;
  4. Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff;
  5. Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the policies of the Health Directorate. This includes the promotion and application of workplace relations, workplace equity and diversity and workplace safety; and
  6. Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice.

7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

· Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);

  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

Desirable

· Experience in Anaesthesia; and

· Demonstrated interest in research or higher level academic achievements.

· Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

· Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.

· Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
