GP/Consultant/Specialist

The Position

An exciting permanent position for a Full-Time Staff Specialist or Senior Staff Specialist in Psychiatry - Child Youth & Adolescent Mental Health Services has become available in Northern QLD!


You will provide an advanced standard of clinical care through the provision of assessment and treatment services to children and young people up to the age of 18 and their families, presenting with mental disorders, alcohol and other drug, emotional and/or behavioural disturbances to facilities within the Hospital and Health Service, including those being treated under the Mental Health Act (2016).


This role will provide some services to the rural communities in surrounding regions and rural hubs, in addition to supporting the local Child and Youth Mental Health Service. The role will include support of the Child and Adolescent Court Liaison Forensic Mental Health service based locally.


You will also provide support ongoing education within the mental health service through the supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and medical students. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists participate in governance and educational activities jointly with their Adult Psychiatry colleagues and participate in the same after hours on call roster, hence will be required when on call to provide services to consumers across the full age spectrum.


Health Service

The Health Service comprises an acute mental health inpatient facility with 24 beds and a Step-Up Step-Down Unit with 10 beds. Community Mental Health Services include an Acute Care Service, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Continuing Care Team, Mobile Intensive Rehabilitation Team, Early Psychosis service ages 16-25, Child and Youth Mental Health, Older Persons Mental Health and Alcohol & Other Drugs Services. There is also opportunity for involvement in community and inpatient services to clients managed and supported on forensic orders. The rural communities are serviced by outreaching community teams in the surrounding areas.

Based within a vibrant regional centre in tropical North Queensland, servicing a population of over 180,000. The region has a thriving economy that includes a diverse range of tourism, agriculture, industry, mining, education and health industries. North Queensland provides relaxed and comfortable rural and coastal living opportunities, only an hour flight from Brisbane and a short distance to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. The tropical climate is ideal for outdoor living with beautiful beaches and a spectacular natural environment nearby. Families are well serviced by a choice of high quality schools and a wide range of sporting clubs with excellent facilities.


Essential Criteria

  • Mandatory possession of a medicine degree from a registered tertiary institution and; 

  • Registration with the Medical Board of Australia with Specialist registration in Psychiatry or appropriate registration with the Medical Board of Australia to practise in the specialist position and; 

  • Fellowship or eligibility for Fellowship via the substantial comparability pathway of the Royal Australian College and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) 

  • Accreditation or progress towards accreditation in any of the subspecialty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, including ability to supervise advanced trainees in any of those fields, will be considered an advantage.


The Package

Total remuneration value of up to $470,780 (L24) is comprised of: A salary between $204,206 - $237,196 (L18-L24)


Total remuneration value of up to $514,452 (L27) is comprised of: A salary between $244,201 - $258,910 (L25-L27)
