An Advanced Trainee position at Tamworth offers:

• 18 months ACEM accredited ED training
• Paid protected ten-hour education day every 2-3 weeks

• Local six months Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine term
• Tailored support for ACEM Fellowship exam preparation

The role is suitable for Advanced Trainees enrolled in ACEM’s FACEM Training Program. There is early access to the six-month ANZCA accredited anaesthetics term and/or six-month CICM accredited ICU term allowing you to develop your critical care skills including airway skills and the management of the critically unwell patient. There is a six-month ACEM accredited retrieval medicine term for suitably experienced registrars. Fellowship Preparation is tailored for you with an ACEM examiner and regular OSCE role players amongst the local FACEM cohort.

We are part of the Hunter New England Local Health District which stretches from the NSW coast to the Queensland border and along with the rest of HNELHD and Port Macquarie are Network 4 in HETI’s Emergency Medicine Training Network.

We are the regional referral centre providing trauma and critical care services to over 15 rural hospitals. The ED sees 45,000 presentations annually across all specialties and age groups. There are daily opportunities for procedural skills improvement in a supported environment with 12.8 full-time equivalent FACEM staff with FACEM staffing on-site from 0700 - 2400 seven days/week. The Westpac Helicopter Retrieval Service has a base in Tamworth and medical staffing mainly consists of local ED senior staff. There is a 6-month ACEM accredited retrieval medicine term available for suitably experienced registrars.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of an Advanced Trainee in Emergency Medicine is to provide high quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
Trainees undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with their colleagues when appropriate.

Advanced Trainees work under a level of supervision according to their competence in the following activities:

• Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients.
• Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care.
• Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans.
• Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists.
• Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community-based care modalities for optimal post discharge care.

This is a contracted position up until Sunday the 2nd of February 2025.

1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
2. Demonstrated ability to work with appropriate independence, commensurate with a level of a Specialist Trainee, within a supervised complex clinical environment.
3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
4. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
5. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
8. Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
