Our Journey

A new opportunity has become available for psychology embedded within the Monash Health Nephrology Team and we are looking for Senior Psychologists or experienced Grade 2 Psychologist (Clinical or Health Psychology Endorsed) to join our passionate, dynamic Multi-Disciplinary team at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, on a two year fixed term, part time (0.4) contract.

The Monash Health Nephrology service provides treatment for renal diseases. Treatment includes diagnosis, disease management, dialysis (haemodialysis and peritoneal), transplantation (kidney and pancreas) and supportive care including psychological care. The primary purpose of the Psychologist role is to enhance or develop self-care behaviors in patients to help them manage their health successfully and reduce avoidable admissions to public hospitals.

This is a unique opportunity to bring your passion for working closely with patients facilitating acceptance and change, expand your knowledge and develop expertise whilst being a valued member of a well-experienced multidisciplinary team. You will be enabled to actively support positive adaptation to living with kidney failure and the promotion of independence through self-care behaviours that enable patients to manage their own health as successfully as possible and reduce avoidable hospital admissions.

A Day in the Life

The clinical psychologist or health psychologist plays a pivotal role in the Nephrology service. This includes:

  • Providing Psychological assessment and maintaining a therapeutic caseload of patients
  • Delivering quality evidence based, best practice in addressing psychological concerns of patients living with a complex chronic health condition
  • Targeted psychological interventions for procedural distress, pain management, depression, anxiety and specific phobias
  • Liaison with the Multi-Disciplinary team and relevant stakeholders regarding formulation, treatment and management of patients with a key focus on quality improvement activities, research and evaluation
  • Provision of psychological education to the wider health care team

This role is embedded within a well-experienced multidisciplinary team (medical, nursing and allied health) and supported by the Psychology and Specialist Services of Monash Health. Access to Psychology specific Clinical Education will be available to support skill development as required.

About You:

  • You have been registered and practising psychology for at least 3 years
  • You have experience or a strong interest in developing your experience in working with chronic and complex medical presentations and their psychological impact
  • You are competent in cognitive-behavioural therapy, have a strong understanding and interest in family systems frameworks, behavioural techniques, problem solving therapy, social skills training and psychoeducation
  • You have a demonstrated ability to work within an evidence-based framework for psychological service delivery
  • You have experience in working across the lifespan and with older adults
  • If applying for the Grade 3 position, you are committed to supervision of provisional psychologists and Grade 2 Psychologists / or working toward obtaining training and supervisor registration

What you need:

  • Current general registration as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Professionals Regulation Authority (AHPRA)
  • Having or working towards AHPRA endorsement in clinical or health psychology
  • Experience working in health settings
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement and ability to work in collaboration with a Multi-Disciplinary Team
  • Grade 2 applicants: You hold endorsement in Clinical or Health Psychology
  • Grade 3 applicants: You hold endorsement in Clinical or Health Psychology and have a minimum 5 years' experience working as a registered psychologistat Grade 2 level (or equivalent). You are a registered supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia or actively working towards obtaining your supervisor registration
