The Position

An exciting opportunity for a Psychiatry Staff Specialist to join the team of this Western Sydney Mental Health Centre supporting their Older Persons Mental Health Unit with support extended to community mental health teams within the district.


This permanent position provides timely and need-adapted care to people presenting for specialist care within an acute mental health inpatient setting and community mental health settings. Additionally, it includes a medical leadership role that supports medical staff and the development of older persons mental health services in line with the strategic direction and vision of the Mental Health Service. Successful applicants will contribute to team expertise across a range of therapeutic modalities and participate in key clinical decisions. While the position is identified as full time, fractional appointments may be considered if service needs are still able to be met.


Applicants who expect to be eligible for Fellowship within 3 months and who have no more than one College-administered assessment to complete may be considered; if successful, the applicant will not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed. Successful applicants also participate in a District-wide after-hours roster.

Essential Criteria

  • Possess or be eligible for: registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZP) or equivalent as provided for in the Health Services Act 1997; relevant certificate of Advanced Training. 

  • Current NSW driver’s license.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Continuing Professional Development and reflective practice.

  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in providing effective, high quality mental health services in a psychiatry setting; demonstrated commitment to person-centered, recovery oriented, family inclusive, trauma informed and need adapted principles of care.

  • Demonstrated ability to support and work in collaboratively inter professional contexts that include lived-experience professionals; sound knowledge of psychiatry encompassing biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual domains. Expertise and experience relevant to the position.

  • Demonstrated high level verbal and written communication ability including capacity to communicate clearly, inclusively, and respectfully. Word processing skills necessary to complete expert documentation.

  • Demonstrated skill and commitment to the teaching and supervision of medical staff, non-medical colleagues, and students consistent with contemporary best practice; commitment to inter professional learning.


The Package

  • Salary range of $174,659-$235,970 depending on level of experience.

  • Managerial allowances of $24,225-$60,565
