Enrolled Nurse to Mental Health Nursing Transition Program

The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is one of the largest health providers in the state, delivering a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical and mental health services, as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient and community programs.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Mental Health Services (RMH MHS) deliver quality care across the RMH including acute adult inpatient, eating disorders, neuropsychiatry, community care and community programs.

The RMH MHS provides person-centred, recovery-oriented care, treatment and support through our multi-disciplinary workforce of skilled and dynamic clinicians and Lived and Living Experience (LLE) consumer and carer experts. We are dedicated to providing caring and high-quality specialist community and hospital-based mental health services for adults and older adults who are experiencing or are at risk of developing a serious mental illness.

The Enrolled Nurse Transition Program is an integral part of RMH MHS commitment to develop our future workforce. We are currently seeking to recruit enthusiastic Enrolled Nurses (EN), who are either recently qualified or new to working in public mental health, to take part in our Enrolled Nurse Transition to Mental Health Nursing Practice program. The EN transition program offers a professional development pathway that gives Enrolled Nurses a supported transition into Mental Health Nursing and prepares them for ongoing employment opportunities.

If you are an Enrolled Nurse, interested in Mental Health Nursing, are newly qualified or want to move into Mental Health Nursing and are finding it difficult to get an opportunity to work in a Mental Health setting because of lack of experience then this program could be for you. The 12 month structured program provides an excellent opportunity to extend your nursing knowledge in the specialist area of mental health nursing.

You will be supported by the Enrolled Nurse Graduate Coordinator and Enrolled Nurse educators in the clinical settings.

Your new role:

During the program you will be employed in one of our Adult or Older Adult Clinical Services. The program is run over 12 months and includes planned and supported professional development activities that are followed by a period of clinical skill consolidation.

  • If you are passionate and interested in joining a program that offers high quality evidence-based pathways for emerging mental health nurses then come and hone your skills with likeminded transition enrolled nurses.
  • Participate in a structured and tailored mental health nurse education program facilitated by RMH - MHS
  • Provide high quality standards of consumer care; includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for care in collaboration within multidisciplinary team
  • Maintain an understanding of individual responsibility for consumer safety, quality and risk.
  • Promote a friendly, respectful and supportive environment within the department and organisation.
  • Engage in structured learning programs as you work towards becoming aspecialistmental health enrolled nurse.
  • Provide high quality standards of patient care within the EN scope of practice
  • Work inmultidisciplinaryclinical team settings
  • Perform nursing interventions and procedures in accordance with RMH policy and procedures.

About you:

  • Experience working as a enrolled nurse in acute health, sub-acute or aged care or a recenntly qualified EN who is motivated to transition to mental health nursing and complete the transition program
  • Enthusiastic and motivated to develop skills and knowledge as a mental health enrolled nurse including mental health practice - risk assessment, mental state assessment and care planning; recovery-oriented approaches and relevant legislation as it applies to mental health care
  • Understand the professional, ethical, legal responsibilities of Enrolled Nurses
  • Understand the importance of compassionate nursing care which focuses on the best possible consumer outcomes.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • A current Victorian Driver’s License,
