The Pharmacy Department at Townsville University Hospital are seeking an experienced and outcome driven Pharmacist for an Assistant Director role. This is a temporary full-time vacancy initially up to the 05/05/2024, with a possibility of an additional 12 month extension.

This role will manage the delivery of pharmacy services for a large pharmacy team within a tertiary referral hospital - the Townsville University Hospital.

This position will apply well developed clinical and pharmaceutical knowledge and skills to contribute to the strategic direction of the area of jurisdiction and to provide authoritative counsel to stakeholders.

The Pharmacy Department provides the following services to the Townsville University Hospital:

  • Clinical Pharmacy Services as described by the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) Standards and by Queensland Health Standards.
  • Provision of information about medications to both patients and their carers, including counselling for patients about their medications.
  • Dispensing of prescriptions for both inpatients at discharge from hospital and outpatients.
  • Manufacturing of medicinal products, creams, mixtures, aseptic and chemotherapeutic medications.
  • Distribution and supply of medications to departments and wards within the Townsville University Hospital.

The Pharmacy Department provides the following services to the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS):

  • Supply of medications to other Queensland Hospitals as required.
  • Provision of emergency relief pharmacists where practical to other areas in THHS.
  • Provision of pharmaceutical support to all areas of THHS.
  • Provision of medication information to staff throughout THHS, in the form of answering drug information enquiries, presenting lectures and in-services.

Employment Term

  • Fixed Term Temporary full-time, up to 05/05/2024
    (with a possibility of an additional 12 month extension).

  • Wage rate ranges between $6011.50 - $6222.70 p.f. (HP6)

Role requirements

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree from a recognised tertiary institution and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Must hold a relevant post-graduate qualification OR have the equivalent level of experience.

The ideal applicant will be someone who has proven ability and can demonstrate the following:  

  • Clinical Expertise
    Demonstrated specialist-level knowledge, expertise and skills in contemporary clinical practice standards in pharmacy. This includes an understanding of all forms of pharmaceutical care according to the principles of evidence-based practice, as well as knowledge of acts, regulations and standards.

  • Communication 

    Demonstrated ability to provide authoritative counsel to stakeholders on matters falling within their given area of responsibility.
  • Leadership  
    Demonstrated ability to apply strategic direction within a large facility or across multiple facilities; and contribute to the development of professional standards on a Hospital and Health Service and State-wide basis.
  • Operational Management 
    Demonstrated ability to provide strategic and operational management to pharmacy team/s operating within a large facility or a District or service area.
