Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The position will be primarily located atNepean Hospital, within the Department of Neonatology.

The successful applicant will be a fully qualified Neonatal Intensive Care Specialist with experience in all aspects of resuscitation, stabilization and management of critically ill or extremely immature infants born in a level 6 Perinatal Centre or transferred ex-utero from other hospitals. They will provide leadership in working within a multidisciplinary team which includes other neonatal consultants and subspecialist consultants as well as neonatal fellows, CMOs, registrars, nurses, allied health and administration staff within the Neonatal Department. The successful applicant will need to have extensive experience performing bedside ultrasound studies for assessment of cardiac function and have completed or be eligible to complete their CCPU certificate. Significant interest in medical education is expected with extensive experience in advanced neonatal resuscitation training, including the use of a variety of simulation equipment to teach effective ventilation, communication and teamwork.

Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Medicine at the relevant University attached to the facility. The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the district for clinical matters.

The successful applicant is expected to participate in an on-call roster with five other Staff Specialists working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Selection Criteria

  1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) in the specialty of neonatal and perinatal medicine.
  2. Possess Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Practitioners (FRACP) and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1997 and Staff Specialists (State) Award and completion of advanced training in Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine. Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice are requirements of the position.
  3. Sound clinical knowledge in Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including extensive skills in clinician performed bedside ultrasound.
  4. High level interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work and provide leadership within a multidisciplinary team and evidence of participation in quality assurance activities relevant to the specialty.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and education of neonatal staff including improvement of rapid response abilities through leading formal and informal simulation training.
  6. Demonstrated ability to provide junior medical staff supervision consistent with contemporary best practice supervision standards.
  7. Demonstrates the skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling of a high standard of professional behavior to their patients, the parents/families/carers of these patients and to all health care staff.
  8. Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research as required within the Department.
