The Role:

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Clinical Forensic Medicine team at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM). The position of Forensic Physician provides an opportunity to work in a stimulating environment that includes access to academic activities curtesy of the on-site Monash University Department of Forensic Medicine as well as a variety of other VIFM forensic practitioners which includes forensic anthropologists, forensic toxicologists (pharmacology), molecular biology scientists and forensic dentists.

You will be part of the Clinical Forensic Medicine team responsible for the delivery and coordination of forensic services to both alleged victims of crime and alleged perpetrators as part of supporting justice services in Victoria. These forensic services are provided to a range of Justice agencies across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Forensic Physicians will work in close collaboration with a range of health care and social welfare service providers in order to facilitate the delivery of care services by these agencies and organisations.

Additionally, the Forensic Physicians provide teaching and training services for and in collaboration with Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University, and supervise junior doctors, forensic medical officers and nurses.

This position is for the delivery of services predominantly within the metropolitan Melbourne service.

As an institution focused on forensic medicine, we serve the community and the courts. Our statutory responsibilities are to provide independent forensic medical and scientific expertise to the justice system, tissue for transplantation, and to both teach and undertake research that will benefit the community.

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) provides the justice system with the crucial evidence that underpins safe convictions and appropriate acquittals. Our doctors and scientists investigate deaths reported to the Coroner, examine alleged offenders and medically assess and support victims of crime.

The Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria (DTBV) supports patients and their families by providing safe tissues to medical specialists and Victorian hospitals for transplantation and medical research.

Our medical and scientific staff members undertake research that directly contributes to public health and safety and the just working of our legal system. By contributing to the professional development and education of forensic pathologists, physicians and scientists, we ensure a high standard of forensic medical services for Victoria and provide critical support for our healthcare and justice systems.

 

Our Working Relationships

The Institute is a statutory agency within the Justice and Community Safety portfolio and our responsible minister is the Attorney-General. We work in close partnership with many sectors of the Victorian community.

The strength of the working relationships we have with our clients and stakeholders is critical to our success. Our primary stakeholders are Victoria Police, the courts and we work for, and in close collaboration with, the Coroners Court of Victoria.

The Institute operates the Coronial Admissions and Enquiries Office and undertakes medico-legal death investigations on behalf of the Coroners Court. The Institute also has a Service Level Agreement with Victoria Police to deliver clinical forensic medical services and toxicology testing. Other important partners include the Victorian courts, Monash University, the University of Melbourne, the Australian Federal Police, legal and medical professionals, and public and private hospitals.

Requirements:

  • General and/or Specialist registration as a medical practitioner by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or ability to obtain such registration. 
  • A minimum of 6 years post graduate clinical experience, with a minimum of 3 years full time equivalent experience in Clinical Forensic Medicine.
  • It is preferable that candidates have a forensic medical qualification from a college or faculty (such as the FFCFM (RCPA); FFLM(RCP) UK or equivalent) and CFM experience. However, consideration will also be given to candidates with other relevant post graduate qualifications or training, including:
    • a postgraduate degree qualification in forensic medicine (such as MForensMed); or
    • the satisfactory completion of a jurisdiction’s recognised forensic medical specialty training program.
