What you'll be doing

The Clinical Nurse Consultant is a Registered Nurse/Midwife who has responsibility for providing consultancy, support, education, training, research and advocacy for child and family health staff across South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. The position will provide clinical leadership, education, training and liaison with service partners and the community in relation to child and family health. The position will also develop and maintain formal and informal links with key internal and external child and family health partners across the health and welfare service network. The position may also contribute to NSW Ministry of Health initiatives and consultation processes related to the field of Child and Family Health.


The CNC is also required to participate in the provision of clinical supervision to primary and secondary level child and family health nurses.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 2 means:aregistered nurse/midwife appointed as such to a position approved by the Health Service, who has at least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, with at least 3 years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field. In addition the employee must have approved post graduate nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed to or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service.

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.

All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.

A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.

Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

  1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse/Midwife, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and current NSW Driver’s License.
  2. Minimum five years full time equivalent post qualification experience, with at least three years full time equivalent experience in the specialty field and post graduate qualifications relevant to the field of practice, or other such qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the public hospital or public health organisation.
  3. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
  4. Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework.
  5. Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence based research.
  6. Demonstrated skills in strategic and clinical service planning including an understanding of organisational behaviour, change management and cultural change processes.
  7. Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching, competency in the use of contemporary information systems and experience in the development of specialty education programs.
  8. Demonstrated clinical expertise in client-centred consultancy with the ability to work independently.
