WSLHD - Trainee - Addiction Medicine

Where you'll be working

Western Sydney Local Health District is responsible for the provision of health services to the local government areas comprised of Cumberland, TheShire, Blacktown, , and Parramatta LGA’s and tertiary care to some patients external to WSLHD.These services are provided through a number of hospital and community-based facilities located strategically across the District.

Western Sydney Local Health District is committed to achieving continuous quality improvement in client services within a Quality Management framework, with a supporting Strategic Plan aimed at the continuous improvement of all facilities. The District has individual facilities located at Westmead, Cumberland, Auburn, Blacktown and Mount Druitt. In addition, Drug Health has facilities in community health centres at Merrylands, Parramatta, Doonside and Castle Hill.

All hospitals provide a range of both in-patient and outpatient services to clients both from within the boundaries of the District and cross border flows. In addition to this, there are a number of facilitates strategically located across the District that provide primary health care services to the community.

What you'll be doing
  • The primary responsibility of the Drug Health trainee is to provide high quality, evidence-based care, to patients with substance use disorders, in both inpatient and ambulatory settings, under the supervision of Drug Health staff specialist medical officers.
  • The Drug Health trainee will provide day to day clinical management of patients with substance use disorders in accordance with Drug Health and LHD policies and procedures, and relevant NSW Health and national guidelines. Level of independence and autonomy will depend on previous experience and current competence, and will determined by supervising staff specialists.

The Training Network

The trainee position is designed to rotate at the principal clinical sites in Drug Health every 3 to 6 months. These are outpatient based services at Cumberland Centre for Addiction Medicine, Fleet St OTP clinic, Blacktown and Mt Druitt clinics. Some additional consult/liaison work is performed at the Cumberland, Mt Druitt and Blacktown hospitals, with inpatient care in the latter as well.


Training Opportunities

This position is suitable for advanced trainees in Addiction Medicine aiming for FAChAM (RACP). It caters to all the core requirements for this program and through links with other services such as Pain and Mental Health, can provide non-core elements too.

As above, it can also be accredited towards FRACGP training as a special skills term. It is also available to medical practitioners who are not accredited with any college training program.Educational opportunities include fortnightly journal club presentations, attendance at weekly grand round presentations, clinical review and M&M meetings. The trainee would be expected to present at all these meetings on some occasions. If the formal OTAC (opioid treatment accreditation course) has not been completed prior to employment, allowance would be made to attend this course. Informal teaching is emphasized throughout and the level of clinical supervision by staff specialists is extensive.
Involvement with the research program in the service is available and encouraged.

Supervision Arrangements

  • Clinical supervision is available informally at all times and formal sessions are available in addition to regular performance reviews. The trainees work in close collaboration with the staff specialists in all clinical settings.
  • Further support is available after hours as the service operates with an on call staff specialist roster outside business hours.


Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. At least 4 years hospital experience. Prior completion of Part 1 FRACP or FRANZCP, completion of the FRACGP or equivalent for eligibility to enter Addiction Medicine training. Trainees anticipating completing the above in 2021 may be considered.
  3. Excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical judgement.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team - with appropriate levels of diligence, punctuality, organization, record keeping, time management, problem solving skills and team work.
  5. Excellent communication (verbal and written) in English and familiarity with computer programs, to facilitate use of electronic medical records (e.g. Cerner ‘Powerchart’).
  6. Demonstrated ability to provide empathic, non-judgmental and expert clinical care.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing advanced training education, research and teaching; demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement.
  8. Completion of the Opioid Treatment Accreditation Course (OTAC) or a commitment to do so prior to commencing employment.
