About the opportunity:

  • The Nursing School Based Trainee (SBT) program provides students with invaluable paid nursing work experience in a local public hospital/facility while completing the Certificate III Health Services Assistance. If you are commencing Year 11 in 2025 and have an interest in becoming a nurse, or you just love helping others, this may be a great opportunity for you!
  • While you continue your schooling, you will be working a day per week and gaining first-hand experience, with the traineeship also contributing to your final ATAR.
  • It's a great way of forging a career in nursing - you may decide to go on and become an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) as all successfully completed trainees able to become a casual AIN upon completion. Or you may use your Certificate III as a pathway into the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nursing) or even an undergraduate degree at university (Registered Nursing).
  • There are multiple opportunities available across our District - you will be asked to select your preferred facility/location when applying online.


What you'll be doing

  • The Health Services Assistant Certificate III School Based Trainee is accountable for helping to provide a safe environment, high standard of care, under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • The function of the Health Services School Based Trainee is to work within the framework and policies of Hunter New England Health, NSW Health and the appropriate Legislation and Statutory regulations to provide basic nursing care to patients/clients/families in facilities/units in HNELHD.
  • Clinical practice will be provided by the Division of Nursing and associated clinical services within Hunter New England Health. Trainees must attend a minimum of 100 clinical days/700 hours of clinical work at the employing facility/unit.
