The Intensive Care Unit is a 36 bed Level 3 Intensive Care Unit in a 600-bed tertiary referral and the major trauma centre for the SESLHD. It is a major teaching hospital of theFaculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales.

  • Most surgical and medical subspecialties are represented in the case-mix in keeping with the tertiary referral centrestatus of the hospital. What you'll be doing

This position is suitable for Junior Medical Officers that have completed a minimum of 2 years of postgraduate experience and have an interest in pursuing a career in critical care (ICU, ED or Anaesthetics).

The Intensive Care Unit is a ‘state-of-the-art’ 52 bed facility (currently 36 beds operational) in a 600-bed tertiary referral and the major trauma centre for SESLHD. It is a major teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales. In addition to the major trauma, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery and complex GI cancer surgery, the ICU provides an ECMO service. The Intensive Care Unit provides care to over 3200 patients admitted per annum, employs 13 intensivists, and supervises and trains 45 full-time ICU junior medical staff at any one time.

There is an ICU-based echocardiography service with an opportunity for hands-on training. There is a state-of-the-art simulation lab within the ICU with regular SIM based training. All JMOs are well supported by Senior Trainees and Consultants and the ICU has active teaching and research programs.

The unit runs a CICM primary examination teaching program for candidates who plan to undertake the CICM primary exam or similar.

ICU Senior Resident Medical Officers will have responsibilities which include

  • Co-ordinating and documenting the admission, management and discharge of patients
  • The day-to-day assessment and management of patients in the unit
  • Communicating with patients and families
  • Co-ordinating care with other specialtiesand primary care providers
  • Keeping the Intensive Care Consultants abreast of all patient events
  • Initial resuscitation and subsequent management of ICU patients
  • Working harmoniously and effectively in a team which include other Medicos, Nursing Allied Health and clerical staff
  • Participation in all relevant unit-based education and administrative activities as directed

The roster is a week-on/week-off pattern of 7 consecutive 12-hour day/night shifts.

    Qualifications

    1. MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
    2. Completion of at least wo postgraduate years.
    3. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment
    4. Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
    5. Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self-education
    6. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills.
    7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
    8. Demonstrated career goal to undertake further training in critical care medicine and aptitude for acute care medicine.
