FLOAT DOCTOR (Senior)
The purpose of this shift is to ensure medical capacity considering the increasing
levels of activity and acuity in the Emergency Department and the Medical Unit so that timely, safe and quality care can be consistently delivered
The Float shift can be occupied by a doctor with clinical decision-making ability and
technical skills that support independent practice across both Emergency Medicine
and General Medicine.
The float shift runs from 1300-2300 hours, unless otherwise specified.
The float shift can be filled by doctors who are either salaried or on medical service
agreement.
The roles and responsibilities of the float doctor include:
1. To check in with the most Senior MO on the Ward and the ED at the
commencement of the shift to assess and plan for patient care priorities.
2. If non-urgent patient care is required, they are to complete any outstanding
results (pathology and radiology) checking in the ED.
3. Receive and provide clinical handover in accordance with clinical handover guideline.
4. Respond to patient deterioration on the ward and other ward calls.
5. RAT (rapid assessment and treatment) to front load investigation and
treatment of ED patients at times of ED overcrowding.
6. Assist with patient load in ED.
7. Act as the medical escort for road ambulance transfer as required.
FLOAT DOCTOR (Upskilling)
The Float shift may also serve as an upskilling opportunity for doctors who wish to
develop a level of competency that allows independent and unsupervised practice at the hospital
The frequency of shifts that individual doctors are allocated will be determined by the
doctor’s level of experience and need for skills development. The Float (Upskilling)
shifts will be part of a broader individualised upskilling program created by the
medical leadership team.
Doctors already providing a service in the Wheatbelt community will be prioritised
over out-of-region doctors.
