- Successful completion of Certificate III Acute Care (HLT33115) with experience in acute care environments deemed appropriate by WSLHD or documented evidence of placement in 2nd Year as an undergraduate Registered Nurse at tertiary level documented evidence of enrolment in Diploma of Nursing (HLT54115).
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to use information technology systems
- Proven ability to be self-motivated, flexible and adaptive as clinical needs arise, and still remain within the scope of practice of an AIN

About The Role:
- In this program you will be allocated to the McQuoin Ward. This is a highly productive surgical orthopaedics ward, where you will report directly to the Nurse Unit Manager and integrate into the nursing and multidisciplinary team.
- The Assistant in Nursing provides support to the Nursing staff in the delivery of basic care in busy surgical department. This experience could assist you in securing a New Graduate Position in the future.
About You:
- Enrolled in and undertaking a Bachelor of Nursing at 2nd year level.
- Enrolled in and undertaking a Diploma of Nursing and in at least 2nd stage.
- Certificate 3 in Health Service Assistance.
- Complete fundamental clinical skills, to assist the RN/EN workforce.
- Flexible and available to work on a 24/7 rotating roster.

This is a unique opportunity for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander undergraduate nursing student to join a structured two-year mental health nursing development pathway while completing a Bachelor of Nursing with the University of New England. Working as an Assistant in Nursing under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurses, and with support from the YAMHS Clinical Nurse Consultant, you will gain practical mental health nursing experience while developing the clinical, cultural and professional capabilities required to transition towards Registered Nurse practice. The program combines university study, paid workplace learning, clinical experience, cultural support and professional development, providing a supported pathway from undergraduate nursing student to the future Aboriginal mental health nursing workforce.
Your contract will be renewed at the end of each semester, subject to successful completion of workplace, clinical placement and university academic traineeship requirements in accordance with the program matrix, traineeship plan and clinical and non-clinical workplace records. Your HECS fees will be paid by your employer while you are employed in the program, and flexible working arrangements are available to support you throughout your studies.
What You Will Be Doing
As an Undergraduate Assistant in Nursing, you will gain valuable experience working within Aboriginal mental health services while being supported to develop your clinical and professional skills.
You will:
- Provide delegated nursing care under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurses.
- Engage respectfully with Aboriginal consumers, families and communities.
- Contribute to culturally safe, person-centred care planning and delivery.
- Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary mental health teams.
- Develop practical skills and knowledge in mental health nursing.
- Participate in clinical learning, workplace education and competency development.
- Build your understanding of culturally safe and trauma-informed mental health practice.
- Develop communication, clinical and professional skills to support your transition towards Registered Nurse practice.

About You
We are looking for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander undergraduate nursing students who are passionate about improving mental health outcomes for Aboriginal people, families and communities and interested in building a career in mental health nursing.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and meet the requirements applicable to an identified position.
- Be currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of New England.
- Have successfully completed your first year of study and be commencing your first semester/trimester of second or third year.
- Be able to commit to completing the structured two-year development program.
- Meet the university, clinical placement and workplace requirements of the program.

- Cultural clinical governance, cultural supervision and support through YAMHS.
- Support from the YAMHS Service Manager, Team Leader/CNC and broader Aboriginal mental health workforce.
- Structured workplace learning and competency development.
- Support to balance employment with university requirements, residential/intensive study and clinical placements.
- A dedicated study day and lecture day each week during semester, with the opportunity to work from home on these days where appropriate.
- Support to attend required University intensives.
- Regular reviews of your progress against the program's clinical and non-clinical workplace development requirements.

The Role

About the role
As an Assistant in Nursing, you’ll play an important role in providing safe, compassionate and person-centred care across a range of healthcare settings.
You will:
- Assist patients and residents with activities of daily living and personal care.
- Support the delivery of patient- and person-centred care with compassion, dignity and respect.
- Work collaboratively with nurses, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to the wellbeing and comfort of patients and residents across aged care, acute care and emergency settings.
- Build positive relationships with patients, residents, families and colleagues.

Requirements
- Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Assistant in Nursing); or
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate Registered Nursing degree, having completed first year and first semester or trimester of second year; or
- Be currently enrolled in a TAFE NSW Diploma of Nursing, with completion of the identified foundational units in practice and 80 hours of clinical placement.
- The ability to work a 7-day roster across various care areas.

Based on a minimum 18-month commitment to the position or the agreed duration of your contract. All payments to part-time and contract employees will be made on a pro-rata basis in accordance with the terms of your contract, including any approved extensions. - Come directly from court on remand
- Stay at the MRRC while they attend court in the Sydney Metropolitan Area (before returning to their home correctional centre)
- Stay at the MRRC while they await a vacancy at a centre matching their classification.
Most offenders leave the centre within a few months of their arrival, usually because they obtain bail (and release) or transfer centre
