What you'll be doing
The successful applicant will be working as a Paediatrics and Neonatal Career Medical Officer (CMO) in the Department of Paediatrics and Neonatology at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals (BMDH). They will be exposed to all aspects of Paediatrics and Neonatology at the level of role delineation (i.e., Metropolitan Paediatrics and Nursery Level 4) and is able to competently assess children presenting to the Emergency Department and make appropriate provisional diagnoses and management plans and to determine disposition. They will be expected to manage patients independently with supervision from consultants.
The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of paediatric and neonatal patients, which includes assessment, investigation, performance of necessary procedures and formulation of a management plan. The CMO is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
The CMO is also expected to be proficient at both neonatal and paediatric resuscitation. They will be exposed to a broad range of developmental and behavioural problems, and they are expected to undertake the assessments as part of the multidisciplinary teams and independently where required. They will be expected to assess children at risk and complete a PANOC assessment when required. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
The CMO is expected to supervise and educate junior medical staff and students. They will participate in ongoing professional development, system improvement activities and research.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently under consultant supervision, in a complex clinical environment particularly in the domains of clinical judgment and communication.
- Excellent procedural skills including venepuncture, cannulation, lumbar puncture, urinary catheter insertion or supra-pubic aspirate collection; neonatal chest drain insertion, and umbilical lines insertion.
- Demonstrated advanced neonatal and paediatric resuscitation skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to changing situations in a busy and unpredictable clinical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a multidisciplinary team, including with internal and external key persons or services.
- Demonstrated advanced verbal and written communication skills in the clinical context; this includes ensuring effective, timely and accurate discharge planning for patients.

We are looking to appoint a Consultant Paediatrician to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital - the largest health facility in NSW outside the Sydney-Wollongong-Newcastle corridor, and the key referral centre for much of the state's north-west.
You'll join an established team in a purpose-built, state-of-the art hospital delivering genuine breadth of practice - general paediatrics, neonates and acute care - with a strong educational culture and clear pathways to leadership.
About the service- 19-bed Paediatric Unit with 2,600+ admissions annually, caring for infants through to adolescents to age 18
- Full paediatric medical and surgical service, supported by a modern Special Care Nursery
- Level 3 Neonatal Services attached to a Level 4 maternity service - neonatal care makes up more than half of the inpatient workload
- Paediatric team attends all high-risk deliveries; resuscitates, stabilises and manages infants 32 weeks / 1500g, plus initial stabilisation below these thresholds prior to NETS retrieval
- Close working partnerships with NETS and John Hunter Children's Hospital
- Support from Registrars, JMOs and an experienced multidisciplinary nursing and allied health team
- On site 24/7 ED ( 45,000 presentations/year, 30% paediatric) - the only NSW regional trauma centre north of Newcastle, with a locally based helicopter retrieval service
- Specialist registration (or eligibility for registration) with AHPRA as a Paediatrician
- FRACP (or equivalent qualification recognised by the RACP for the SIMG pathway)
- Demonstrated clinical experience in general paediatrics and neonatal care
- Commitment to teaching, supervision of trainees and quality improvement
- Current NSW Working With Children Check, immunisation compliance and unrestricted right to work in Australia (visa sponsorship available for suitable SIMG candidates)
- Base salary $197,583 - $266,942 p.a. (Staff Specialist State Award, 2025 rates), plus:

Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is seeking a passionate Provisional Fellow to join our Paediatric Department in 2027!
What you'll be doing
The Provisional Fellow position provides advanced trainees an opportunity to further their training, developing skills important for a consultant role in the spheres of clinical care, education, and training as well as research with support from the team consultants and other health care professionals. The provisional fellow role is a leadership role, both within the department for other junior medical staff and medical students as well as members of the multidisciplinary team, but also across the broader hospital community.
This position is a part time role that focuses on advocacy, education and mentoring of medical students enrolled into the Joint Medical Program University of Newcastle and University of New England. In addition, the Provisional Fellow is expected to enhance their clinical skills and provide expertise in the management of children and adolescents by participating in clinical duties primarily within the Department of Paediatrics.
Where you'll be working
You will be supporting 4FTE Paediatric Consultants with another, 2FTE Advanced Trainee, 2FTE Unaccredited Trainee,and 2FTE Junior Medical Officers.
Boasting 18 Paediatric beds, we are a level 4 paediatrics and level 3 neonates' unit with dedicated adolescent and palliative care spaces, 8-bed special care nursery and a 6-bed paediatric unit within the emergency department. We encourage collaboration and collegiate relationships acrossmulti-disciplinary teams ensuring the best service delivery.
The ED sees 52,000 presentations per annum (31% paediatric), 800 paediatric admissions and 1000 births, there is plenty of scope to broaden your paediatric horizons.
