The MS and Neuroimmunology Service at The Alfred was established in late 2017 and has dramatically expanded so that it is now one of the largest MSNI units in Australia. The program delivers a comprehensive research and clinical service that now encompasses outpatient clinics 4 days a week across Alfred campuses. The Alfred MSNI Service pioneered a multi-disciplinary service representing the best international practice in MS and Neuroimmunology. This includes a Director of MSNI, a Head of Neuroimmunology and 8 additional consultants. The multidisciplinary team includes two clinical MSNI nurses, two research nurses, physiotherapists, neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, dietetics, and an NDIS support team from a partner organisation, MSPlus.

Applications are invited for a Locum Specialist in Neurology - MSNI (Fractional), to provide leave backfill from December 2026 to May 2027.
This position is for 10.5 hours per week.

Appointees must be legally qualified practitioners, registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Alfred Care Group's Physiotherapy Department provides acute physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital and subacute physiotherapy services to Caulfield Hospital.

The acute physiotherapy service is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham. The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the latter being based at the Sandringham site. The physiotherapy service provides acute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, burns, lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurology and neurosurgery, stroke, renal, infectious diseases, haematology/oncology, general medicine, haemophilia and emergency.

The physiotherapy service at Caulfield Hospital provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, aged care and residential care services. The physiotherapy service provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, complex regional pain, cardiac rehabilitation, aged care, transitional care and aged psychiatry. The physiotherapy department is organised into functional streams: Neurological Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Health of Older Persons (HOP) and ABI.

The Alfred Care Group's Physiotherapy Department has more than 100 EFT and employs over 170 staff. The physiotherapy service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence. It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy through clinical research. The Senior Physiotherapist (Neurosciences - Rotational) is responsible for the ongoing development and provision of physiotherapy services across the acute and subacute sites of Alfred Care Group, and includes the service provision to the acute Neurosurgery, Neurology and Stroke units, subacute areas of Neurological Rehabilitation & ABI, home based rehabilitation and any other areas assigned to them, in consultation with senior clinician(s) and stream leader at the level of a developing expert. The Patient Service Centre sits within the Surgical Services Program of Alfred Care Group. This program delivers the majority of surgical services across all Alfred Care Group sites. Surgical Services consists of sixteen surgical units, anaesthesia and perioperative medicine, operating suite service, two elective surgical inpatient wards, a medical day unit, day of surgery admissions, day surgery and endoscopy service.

The PSC oversees the elective surgery waiting list, medical elective waiting list and preadmission clinic. This is across both The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital.

The Patient Service Centre is looking for an enthusiastic Peri-operative Coordinator. The peri-operative coordinator manages the patient's planned surgery care & journey, including follow up of test/scans and organising necessary work up required prior to patient's procedure. The coordinator is guided by protocols developed and authorised by the medical unit and department of Anaesthesia & Peri-operative medicine and has a key role in ensuring that patient's arrive on the day of surgery with all relevant documentation completed and a plan of care is in place. The coordinator works on a day to day basis with the surgical units, liaises closely with medical head of unit and is part of the Patient Service centre.

Alfred Care Group's Physiotherapy Department provides acute physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital and subacute physiotherapy services to Caulfield Hospital.

The acute physiotherapy service is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham. The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the latter being based at the Sandringham site. The physiotherapy service provides acute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, trauma, burns, lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary rehabilitation, neurology and neurosurgery, stroke, renal, infectious diseases, haematology/oncology, general medicine, haemophilia and emergency.

The physiotherapy service at Caulfield Hospital provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, aged care and residential care services. The physiotherapy service provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: neurology, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, complex regional pain, cardiac rehabilitation, aged care, transitional care and aged psychiatry. The physiotherapy department is organised into functional streams: Neurological Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Health of Older Persons (HOP) and ABI.

The Alfred Care Group's Physiotherapy Department has more than 100 EFT and employs over 170 staff. The physiotherapy service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence. It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy through clinical research. The Senior Physiotherapist (Neurosciences - Rotational) is responsible for the ongoing development and provision of physiotherapy services across the acute and subacute sites of Alfred Care Group, and includes the service provision to the acute Neurosurgery, Neurology and Stroke units, subacute areas of Neurological Rehabilitation & ABI, home based rehabilitation and any other areas assigned to them, in consultation with senior clinician(s) and stream leader at the level of a developing expert. The Two-year Advanced Training Residency offers

About the Monash Health Pathology Service 

The Monash Health Pathology Service operates under the brand name Monash Pathology and is an integral part of Monash. It is the largest provider of Pathology services in the State of Victoria and currently operates 6 laboratories. The largest of these is located at the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, with additional facilities being located at the Dandenong, Moorabbin, Casey, Victorian Heart Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospitals. There are currently 18 collection centres based within the hospital sites and community settings. Services are provided to the Public and Private sectors, and other laboratory services.   

The Victorian Government is reforming Public Pathology services and creating pathology networks. As such from mid-February 2027 Monash Health Pathology will become part of the Bayside Health pathology network and Monash Health Pathology employees will transfer employment to Bayside Health. While employment will transfer there is no change to the role, location or terms and conditions of employment including recognising length of service, and accrued leave entitlements. Employees will continue to perform their duties from their current work locations, subject to operational requirements.

You will be joining Monash Health at an exciting time as we work in partnership with Alfred Health to be the premier shared public pathology service in Victoria. As a member of the pathology teams you will be helping shape the direction of this partnership.  

About the Role  

Join our team as a Medical Scientist (Thalassemia and Haemophilia Molecular Laboratory) Grade 1 on a full time, fixed term contract for 6 months to work at Monash Health Pathology based at Clayton.  In this role, you will be guided under the leadership of the Principal Scientist, Senior Scientists, Pathologists and working with the broader Diagnostic Genomics Laboratory team. 

The Diagnostic Genomics Laboratory, Monash Pathology is made up of three different areas which operates a Monday to Friday service 8am to 5pm:  

• The Thalassemia and Haemophilia Molecular Laboratory’s role is to confirm the genetic basis for thalassaemia and other significant haemoglobinopathies, identify carrier status and perform prenatal testing for couples at risk of giving birth to children with severe disease. This laboratory also performs proband and carrier testing for Haemophilia A and Haemophilia B as well as prenatal testing.   
• The Genetics and Molecular Pathology laboratory which provides a specialised genetic testing service for oncology, haematology as well as inherited diseases. Our genomics team currently offers DNA and RNA next generation sequencing (NGS) for targeted panels in solid tumour biology, haematology, cardiac and cancer predisposition disorders.
• The Cytogenetics Laboratory which processes a range of prenatal and postnatal specimens, using conventional and molecular diagnostic techniques. This includes DNA extraction, tissue culture, FISH, Microarray, Karyotyping and whole exome sequencing (WES) for monogenic disorders. 

The successful candidate will predominately: 

• Assist the Thalassemia and Haemophilia Molecular Laboratory with a range of diagnostic techniques (for both wet-lab and dry-lab) which may include specimen reception registration, triaging, DNA extraction, PCR, equipment maintenance and participation in laboratory meetings and future educational development.

About You 

To be successful in this healthcare role, you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience, and attributes: 

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability and willingness to show initiative and application to the task at hand 
• A team player capable of interacting with a range of health professionals including oncologists, haematologists, pathologists, genetic counsellors, pathology laboratory and administrative staff.  
• Proven experience in a diagnostic laboratory setting with strong technical capabilities and commitment to quality outcomes.  
• Prior experience with molecular techniques in a NATA accredited laboratory such as DNA extraction, PCR is highly desirable.

Mandatory requirements of the role - qualifications:

• Degree in Science or Applied Science (MLS) or recognised equivalent plus the appropriate laboratory experience.  
• Post graduate qualification or studying for a post graduate qualification is desirable
