We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Director of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) who is passionate about clinical leadership, innovation and building a sustainable, high-performing Emergency Department for the future.
This is more than a traditional medical leadership role. · Building a sustainable medical workforce – strengthening recruitment, retention, clinical supervision, education and training, while progressing ACEM accreditation and reducing reliance on temporary medical staffing.
· Driving clinical excellence and performance – providing strong clinical governance, supporting quality and safety, improving patient flow and embedding a culture of continuous improvement.
· Shaping the future of our service – providing medical leadership through the redevelopment, including service redesign, workforce planning, clinical integration and transition into the expanded Emergency Department.
· Strengthening partnerships – working collaboratively across Bathurst Health Service, Orange Health Service and the broader Western NSW Local Health District, alongside NSW Ambulance, retrieval services and primary care providers, to deliver more connected and sustainable emergency care.

While we all look forward to Bathurst’s brand new, double sized ED facilities, the team continues to innovate to deliver quality care to patients and create a more efficient and rewarding workplace for staff members.
The ED team is a diverse group of health professionals, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, ASET nurse and a nurse practitioner. This multidisciplinary approach fosters a collaborative environment where team members support each other, leading to high staff morale and job satisfaction. The team has recently completed a redesign of ED during the re-development and are piloting new models of care. With a focus on improved patient flow and to reduce ED overcrowding, the Bathurst ED is one of the first in WNSWLHD to commence the ECAT, giving Doctors more time to work on patient management plans and more opportunities to streamline care in collaboration with ED nurses.
Optimised triage processes including advanced nurse triage and streaming pathways are in place to accelerate patient flow, reduce waiting times and improve patient experience.
Bathurst is currently piloting a nurse practitioner-led front-end mode for lower acuity patients. The team works closely with local GPs, Marathon Health, and Primary Health Networks to establish early intervention pathways and care alternatives to avoid unnecessary ED presentations. Examples include direct GP-to-hospital communication, scheduled “hot clinics” for follow-up care, and partnerships for chronic disease management out of hospital. We are also working towards FACEM accreditation.

About the opportunity
An exciting opportunity to lead, shape and transform emergency medicine at Bathurst Health Service.
Bathurst Health Service (BHS) is entering an exciting period of transformation, with a $200 million hospital redevelopment that will see our Emergency Department double in size, creating a unique opportunity to reimagine how emergency care is delivered to our community.
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Director of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) who is passionate about clinical leadership, innovation and building a sustainable, high-performing Emergency Department for the future.
This is more than a traditional medical leadership role. It is an opportunity to lead meaningful change, shape contemporary models of emergency care, strengthen our medical workforce and help build an Emergency Department that delivers safe, timely and exceptional care for the Bathurst community and surrounding region.
The position is a temporary full-time (1.0 FTE) appointment for three years, comprising 0.5 FTE medical leadership and management responsibilities and 0.5 FTE clinical practice.
Working closely with the Bathurst Health Service Executive, and in partnership with nursing, allied health and operational leaders, the Director will play a pivotal role in:
· Transforming emergency care – leading the development and implementation of contemporary, innovative models of care that maximise the opportunities presented by our new Emergency Department and improve patient access, experience and outcomes.
We are looking for a collaborative, visible and inspiring clinical leader who can bring people together, challenge traditional ways of working and translate a shared vision into meaningful improvements for patients and staff.
If you are passionate about emergency medicine, enjoy leading change and want to make a lasting difference to emergency care in regional NSW, we would love to hear from you.
This is your opportunity to help shape the next chapter of emergency medicine at Bathurst Health Service.
Successful candidates may be able to seek an Academic/Teaching/Research role with one of our three partner Universities in the District being University of Sydney for Dubbo Health Service, Charles Sturt University for Orange Health Service and Western Sydney University for Bathurst Health Service. To enquire about available opportunities, please reach out to the relevant Head of Clinical School.
What we can offer you
· Salary consistent with the Staff specialists award including superannuation, and access to salary packaging.
· Relocation and accommodation assistance.
· Contemporary, well equipped work environments.
· Flexible work/life balance.
· Attractive Salary Package , up to 5 weeks Annual Leave with 4 weeks leave including 17.5% leave loading; 5 weeks per year Training Education and Study Leave (TESL), and 10 days paid sick leave per year (dependent on classification).
· Dynamic team environment.

· Corporate wellbeing programs, including the Fitness Passport
Where you'll be working

Moving to our Region.
The Welcome Experience is a free NSW Government service supporting workers (and their families) who have accepted a job with Western NSW LHD in most locations. The service helps with housing, schooling, partner work and community connections.
