The Mental Health Short Stay Unit is a 6-bed ward at the Royal Hobart Hospital. This role is to work in the Mental Health Short Stay Unit and Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department as a Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Join the Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSSU) and play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred mental health care within a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment.In this Clinical Nurse Specialist role, you are required to conduct primary mental health and risk assessments of patients requiring specialized mental health assessment presenting to Emergency Department.

In this advanced clinical role, you will contribute to improving outcomes for people presenting in crisis by conducting comprehensive assessments, supporting clinical decision-making, facilitating access to appropriate services, and ensuring safe and effective transitions of care.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist - Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSSU):

• Works in conjunction with unit staff, the MHSSU, the Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department (ED), Alcohol and Drug Services and Community Mental Health Services to deliver improved outcomes for MHSSU clients and individuals presenting to the ED with mental illness and requiring specialist assessment.
• Is a clinical expert who acts as a specialist resource for nursing, medical, and allied health staff involved in the management of patients with mental health concerns presenting to Emergency Department including those with concurrent alcohol or drug use issues.

• Strong clinical experience and expertise in mental health nursing, particularly within acute or crisis care settings.
• The ability to undertake comprehensive mental health assessments and contribute to care planning and clinical decision-making.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Confidence in providing clinical advice, education and support to colleagues and other healthcare professionals.
• Sound judgement, problem solving skills and a commitment to quality improvement and evidence-based practice.
• An understanding of contemporary mental health care, risk management principles and relevant legislation.
• The ability to work with a high degree of autonomy while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.

Career Medical Officer - Psychiatry - Mental Health Emergency Department.

The Department is seeking a suitably qualified Career Medical Officer (CMO) - Psychiatry Day Work - Mental Health Emergency Department to provide psychiatric assessment, management, and clinical care for consumers presenting with acute mental health concerns.

This is a dedicated psychiatry position working within a specialist mental health emergency service at the Royal Hobart Hospital. The role requires a clinician who is confident in the assessment and management of psychiatric emergencies and capable of making sound clinical decisions.

The successful applicant will work with a high degree of professional autonomy and limited on-site medical supervision, while having access to established escalation pathways and specialist psychiatric consultant support as required.

You will provide mental health medical services across the Royal Hobart Hospital, including:

• Providing medical care to patients in inpatient mental health units, including the Short Stay Unit.
• Attending to mental health patients located throughout the hospital who require specialist medical input.
• You may also be allocated additional duties consistent with your qualifications and clinical experience.

While performing this role, you will be expected to:

• Liaise closely and professionally with consultant psychiatrists regarding patient assessment and management.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation, including admissions, progress notes, decisions, and discharge summaries
• Ensure all medical decisions are clearly recorded in the patient medical record
• Promote collaborative working relationships with the multidisciplinary team involved in patient care

The Team

The Department of Health-Statewide Mental Health Services is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of our community. We are committed to providing the highest levels of healthcare and services across Tasmania.

The Roster Support Unit provides rostering and administrative support and advice to Mental Health Service area managers and staff, using the ProAct rostering system. The Unit manages the Mental Health casual pools, processing of timesheets and general overtime and pay enquiries.

The Mental Health Roster Support Unit is based at Clive Hamilton Building, St Johns Park, Newtown.

The Role

• Provide advice and support to relevant staff in the utilisation of the ProAct Rostering System to support the development and coordination of the roster process.
• Maintain the integrity of the ProAct database through the provision of timely updates to reflect daily roster/allocation changes. This includes updating annual leave rosters across all designated units.
• In consultation with relevant managers:
• Maintain specified staff records, training documentation and management reports.
• Allocate planned and unplanned leave for designated areas.
• Facilitate leave replacement as required.
• Act as the point of contact for all staff in relation to timesheet, overtime and general pay enquiries.
• Attend relevant meetings as required.
• Facilitate training for new staff in relation to the roster support function as required.

You will need

• Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire the knowledge of, the provisions of relevant mental health legislation, awards, guidelines and procedures.
• High level computer skills with the ability to maintain and modify information systems including excel spreadsheets and word processing.
• Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire the knowledge of, the ProAct Rostering System and basic accounting procedures to provide cost effective staff replacement and rostering processes.
• Well developed interpersonal and communication skills including the demonstrated capacity to liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders whilst working effectively both individually and as a member of a team.
• Proven ability to effectively prioritise work and comply with established timeframes, processes and procedures whilst working within an environment subject to work pressure and change.

The Role

As a Registered Nurse working within a multidisciplinary team, the role involves delivering high-quality, person-centred mental health care to older persons in accordance with the Mental Health Services Strategic Plan, Mental Health Service principles, National Mental Health Standards, relevant agency policies, legislative requirements, and professional nursing standards and competencies. The role focuses on promoting mental health and wellbeing, supporting recovery, maintaining dignity and independence, and providing safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care tailored to the individual needs of older persons. OPMHS work together with community supports to assist in the management of Behaviours and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD).

You will need

• Current knowledge of, and the ability to apply nursing principles, procedures and practices in the delivery of patient/client care in a designated practice area and in line with legal and ethical requirements and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board (NMBA) Registered Nurses standards for practice.
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in mental health nursing including assertive case management, triage, holistic physical and mental health assessment, clinical risk management and crisis intervention within the community setting.
• Demonstrated written, oral and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment, communicate effectively with families and carers and with other sectors of mental health services and primary health care providers.

Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, from 31st of December 2026.

Salary

$80,524 to $109,175 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

• Salary range is in accordance withNurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.

Access to the Grade 4 salary range $102,439- $109,175 is subject to successful application for progression to Grade 4

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available

• Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10% based on qualification type

Eligibility

• Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse
• Current Driver’s Licence
• Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)

• Possess specialist tertiary graduate or postgraduate mental health/psychiatric nursing qualification
