Working at the Roy Fagan Centre – A Career with Purpose
The Team:
Who we care:
The Roy Fagan Centre (RFC) is Tasmania’s statewide specialised inpatient mental health facility for older persons, and part of Older Person’s Mental Health Service (OPMHS). We provide compassionate, person-centred care to individuals experiencing acute mental ill health, neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia, and complex psychiatric conditions. Our multidisciplinary team works across four purpose-built units, each designed to support dignity, safety, and therapeutic engagement.
What we do:
We deliver:
- Acute psychiatric care
- Dementia and neuropsychiatric treatment
- Geriatric rehabilitation
- Palliative and end-of-life care
- Rehabilitation and recovery-focused programs
- Support for families, carers, and community transitions
Our patients are older Tasmanians age 65+, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50+, who require specialised mental health support. We also support individuals with young-onset neurodegenerative conditions.
Our Values and Culture:
At RFC, live by the One Health CARE values: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. We also embrace:
- Flexibility and inclusivity
- Transparency and teamwork
- Holistic and trauma-informed care
- Collaboration with families, carers, and community partners
We foster a welcoming, non-clinical environment where music, nature, and creativity are part of everyday life. Staff are encouraged to personalise spaces, build meaningful relationships, and support consumers with empathy and respect.
To further enrich our culture, we actively implement the My Home Life program—an evidence-based approach that promotes quality of life for people living and working in care settings. Through this program, we focus on:
- Enhancing positive communication between staff, consumers, and families
- Strengthening relational care and emotional connection
- Encouraging shared decision-making and reflective practice
- Creating a culture of kindness, dignity, and mutual respect
My Home Life helps us ensure that every interaction is meaningful, every voice is heard, and every person—staff or consumer—feels valued and supported.
Why work with us?
As a manager and team, we offer:
- A deeply supportive and inclusive workplace
- Structured supervision, mentoring, and professional development

What we look for:
We seek individuals who:
- Are compassionate, curious, and collaborative
- Value dignity, autonomy, and person-centred care
- Are committed to continuous learning and reflective practice

About the Victorian Centre for Advancement in Allied Health (VCAAH)
The Victorian Centre for Advancement in Allied Health (VCAAH) was established between the Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association (VAHPA) and the then-Department of Health and Human Services alongside the under the Victorian Allied Health Professionals Enterprise Agreement (2021-2026). Commencing operations in 2026, VCAAH is a first-of-its-kind initiative, funded by the Victorian Government and proudly hosted by Monash Health.
At VCAAH, we believe allied health makes lives well lived possible. Every day, allied health professionals help people learn, recover, participate, adapt and thrive through some of life's most important moments.
Our purpose is to strengthen Victoria's allied health workforce by bringing together people, ideas, evidence and partnerships to tackle shared challenges and create opportunities for the future. Working across all 27 allied health professions recognised by the Victorian Department of Health, we help the sector understand itself more clearly, innovate collectively and build the conditions for allied health professionals to thrive throughout their careers.
Working at VCAAH is a little different.
Join VCAAH as an Allied Health Innovators on full-time or part-time (0.4 eft minimum), fixed-term basis through to 30th December 2027.
We're looking for allied health innovators from different career stages: from Grade 2 to Grade 3, noting that we may not appoint at each grade level.
Innovation isn't a title reserved for the most senior person in the room. Some innovators are building their capability; others coordinate complex work and bring recognised expertise; and others provide specialist leadership that influences thinking and practice across the sector. It's about the right combination of people, skills and experience to ensure that VCAAH delivers high value to the community.
Based at Monash Health’s Kingston Centre in Heatherton, Victoria, there is opportunity to work remotely (within Victoria) through a hybrid arrangement.
We're a small team with a big remit. We ask big questions, challenge assumptions respectfully and aren't afraid to challenge the status quo when it might lead to something better. We're comfortable with ambiguity, committed to learning and motivated by creating meaningful impact for the allied health workforce.
The best work rarely happens in isolation. It happens when people bring different perspectives, share ideas openly and are willing to think beyond the boundaries of a single profession, service or organisation. That's why we value evidence, curiosity and genuine collaboration in equal measure.
The work we do matters. So does how we do it.
We value thoughtful debate, genuine relationships and a healthy sense of humour. We're a team that know and respect each other, and genuinely enjoy working together.
We value team members who think critically, collaborate generously and help turn insight into action. We celebrate strengths, invest in growth and recognise that lasting impact is a shared responsibility.
If you were a fly on the wall in our meetings, you'd see VCAAH’s core principles in action:
-
Courage – We step into complexity and ask the questions that matter.
-
Objectivity – We seek evidence, challenge assumptions and remain curious.
-
Respect – We value diverse perspectives, invest in genuine relationships and challenge each other respectfully.
-
Elevation – We recognise strengths, support growth and help people, professions and the sector succeed.
Opportunities like this are rare.
These positions sit beyond the boundaries of a single profession, service or organisation. You'll work alongside clinicians, leaders, researchers, educators, policy makers and sector partners from across Victoria to explore complex challenges, generate insights and help create practical solutions.
Whether your future lies in clinical leadership, workforce development, education, research, innovation, service improvement or policy, you'll gain exposure to ideas, networks and opportunities that are difficult to access from any single role or organisation
Our hope is that your time with VCAAH leaves you better connected, more capable and more influential than when you arrived.
The work
Depending on your background and interests, you may contribute to workforce development, innovation, research, evaluation or capability-building initiatives.
At VCAAH, we're interested in both delivery and discovery, responding to today's workforce challenges while helping create the conditions for a stronger future.
Our work is diverse and organised around three strategic pillars that guide where we focus our energy and how we create impact across Victoria's allied health workforce.
-
See the Sector: Generate insights, evidence and understanding about Victoria's allied health workforce.
-
Connect the Sector: Bring together people, professions, organisations and ideas to tackle shared challenges.
-
Strengthen the Sector: Support workforce capability, innovation and improvement to help allied health thrive now and into the future.
About You
We're building a team whose strengths, experiences and perspectives complement one another and who will thrive in these roles.
You’ll feel right at home here if:
-
you enjoy exploring complex challenges, bringing people together and turning insight into action;
-
you’re comfortable with ambiguity, open to learning and motivated by making a meaningful contribution to the future of allied health; and,
-
you've found yourself asking "Why do we do it that way?", "What are we missing?" or "What might be possible if we approached this differently?".
Collectively, we're looking for strengths across a range of areas to enable the delivery of our work. We're particularly interested in applicants who bring knowledge of allied health in the public health sector, alongside expertise in one or more of the following:
-
Workforce development
-
Education and capability building
-
Innovation and improvement
-
Research and evaluation
-
Communications and stakeholder engagement
-
Policy, strategy or partnerships
-
Co-design and facilitation
-
Knowledge translation
-
Project and program delivery
-
Health economics, epidemiology or data analytics
Additional consideration will be given to applicants who bring:
-
Independent research capability
-
Regional, rural or statewide perspectives and experience
If you've read this and can see yourself contributing to VCAAH, but you're not sure where your experience fits, we welcome you to reach out for confidential discussion to Caitlin Barr, on 0475 785 617 or
