The Position

The Director Medical Services (DMS) is responsible for the provision of expert professional and clinical leadership in the strategic and operational management of Medical Services and Medical Workforce within Lower Mid North Coast Sector (LMNCS).

As a member of the hospital/service executive, the DMS contributes to the leadership and relevant management of the sector/facility/service, ensuring patients experience the best possible care, safely and compassionately, whilst enabling staff to work in a safe, healthy and culturally sensitive environment.

The DMS is responsible for the leadership of both the Senior Medical Officers (SMO) and Junior Medical Officers (JMO) working in LMNCS which consists of Manning Base Hospital, Gloucester Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Bulahdelah Hospital (Community Health Service), Wingham Hospital (Rehabilitation Unit).

The DMS provides leadership for medical matters with a particular focus on coordination and delivery of high quality and safe clinical services, performance management and well-being of junior and senior medical staff as well as workforce matters ensuring the medical workforce is operating at its full potential.

This position is responsible for ensuring a commitment by all medical staff to Excellence, Every Patient, Every Time, facilitating effective communication and enabling a positive culture in line with the strategic direction and values of Hunter New England Health.

The Package

Staff Specialist Award

Staff Specialists receive the full entitlements of permanent NSW Health employment, including superannuation, leave benefits, salary packaging, relocation support (where applicable), and access to incentives.

Base salaries are determined under the Staff Specialists (State) Award, with indicative ranges from approximately $270,247 to $333,491 per annum + superannuation, depending on experience and allowances (based on a 40‑hour week).

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Clinical Service Provision (0.8 FTE)

• Provide clinical leadership across Far Western Primary Health services including Clive Bishop Medical Centre and Network Clinics (12 outreach clinics)
• Deliver high-quality primary care including acute, chronic, preventative and mental health services
• Undertake consultations in clinic, community, outreach and telehealth settings
• Ensure continuity of care through appropriate follow-up, referrals and coordination
• Supervise and support GP/RG Registrars, junior doctors and medical students
• Provide clinical teaching, mentoring and assessment for learners and help create a positive and supportive learning environment
• Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and local health partners
• Engage respectfully with local communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, to deliver culturally appropriate care

Medical Administration (0.2 FTE)

• Collaborate with Clinical Director of Primary Care to develop and deliver a Rural Generalist (RG) training model
• Support GP Registrars across ACRRM and RACGP pathways
• Build educator capacity among supervisors and ensure quality clinical supervision
• Coordinate training experiences aligned with RACGP, ACRRM, HETI, and university partner requirements
• Promote Rural Generalist career pathways and improve training and support for Registrars and supervisors
• Support Clinical Governance activities, including accreditation (NSQHS, AGPAL/RACGP), quality improvement, clinical audits, and morbidity and mortality reviews
• Contribute to the development and review of clinical protocols, policies, incident reporting and risk management
• Assist in the expansion of services aligned with RFDSSE strategy and mission.

Essential Criteria

• Fellowship with either RACGP or ACRRM. FACRRM and FRACGP-RG preferred
• Current AHPRA registration as a Medical Practitioner
• Significant experience in rural and remote medicine
• Demonstrated experience in medical education and clinical supervision
• Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Rostering

The Package

As a GP you may elect to be paid via:

• a salary package ($211,927 to $296,805), or

Seeking to hire 1 or more pharmacists (up to 1 FTE) with appropriate clinical experience to join the largest Poisons Information Centre (PIC) in Australia to manage suspected or confirmed poisoning of adults and children. The successful candidate will be provided with training to become a Specialist in Poisons Information (SPI). The NSW Poisons Information Centre (NSWPIC) receives 120,000 calls annually (equating to an average of 50 calls per staff member per 8-hour shift, with an average call duration of four minutes). SPI's provide expert guidance on risk assessment, first aid, and the clinical management of suspected or confirmed poisoning incidents (accidental and intentional).

These may involve medicines, illicit substances, chemicals (including household, industrial and agricultural), plants, as well as bites and stings. SPIs manage the majority of calls independently and emulate complex, unusual, or serious cases to clinical toxicologists for medical specialist input.

The NSWPIC is located within The Sydney Children's Hospital Network, at The Children's Hospital Westmead. This role will require the successful applicant to work on-site as required especially during their initial training period, however, the NSWPIC has established remote working practices and can provide flexible work arrangements. Requirements

What you'll be doing

The Senior Hospital Scientist In Charge is responsible for the supervision and coordination of Haematology and Transfusion Services to ensure the delivery of safe, efficient and high-quality pathology services. As the second-in-charge (2IC) to the Laboratory Manager, the position provides operational and leadership support across the laboratory, contributes to workforce management, service development and quality improvement initiatives, and acts on behalf of the Laboratory Manager during periods of leave or absence.

• Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
