Located at an elevation of 576 metres on the highest edge of the Monaro Plains it can be bitterly cold in winter and hot and dry in summer. The area is known for its sheep, cattle, wool, nurseries, honey, wine, hay and barley. It likes to think of itself as a city with a country atmosphere and certainly, when compared to nearby Canberra, it has a languid rural feeling with just the right level of city amenities.
