Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) cares for over 300,000 people across the Northern Rivers, a sub-tropical region of rainforest, coastline and breathtaking natural attractions stretching from Tweed Heads to Grafton. Lismore, the region's cultural and economic capital, sits between the Gondwana rainforest and the Pacific Ocean, just 200 km south of Brisbane.
Across 12 hospitals and 21 community health centres, NNSWLHD clinicians have a direct impact on the health and wellbeing of regional communities, while staying connected to best-practice care across Australia through training networks and partnerships with local and metropolitan tertiary education providers. Major capital projects underway across several facilities reflect the district's investment in the future of care in Northern NSW.
The opportunityThis is a unique opportunity to join a close-knit and supportive Obstetrics and Gynaecology team at Lismore Base Hospital, providing specialist care to women and families across Northern NSW. The department is a busy, well-established unit managing approximately 1,300 births each year, with obstetric care provided for babies from 32 weeks' gestation.
Lismore Base Hospital is appointing additional Staff Specialists to strengthen its workforce and support the long-term sustainability of the service, and has maintained a positive, cohesive culture and a strong commitment to high-quality patient care.
Reporting to the Head of Department, you will:

- Supervise, teach and mentor junior medical officers, registrars and other healthcare professionals
- Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement and service development
- Participate in the on-call roster and help build a sustainable specialist service
You are a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia, including through specialist international medical graduate pathways. You bring recent clinical experience across obstetrics, antenatal care, general gynaecology and surgery, and you enjoy the breadth and variety of generalist practice.
You are a collaborative, adaptable and patient-centred clinician who thrives in a close-knit team. You value collegiality, shared decision-making and a consistent approach to clinical practice. Your communication and counselling skills allow you to balance clinical recommendations with informed patient preferences, supporting women to make decisions about their care.
You are committed to teaching, continuing education and quality improvement, and are available to participate in the on-call roster and respond on site within a reasonable time. You are willing and able to provide the full scope of services offered by the department, including termination-of-pregnancy care, which is an essential component of the position. A valid NSW Working With Children Check is required.

A rare and exciting leadership opportunity has emerged for an experienced Obstetrician & Gynaecologist to step into the role of Head of Department at a well regarded regional hospital within the Northern NSW Local Health District. About the OpportunityAs Head of Department, you will lead and manage a multidisciplinary O&G team, driving best practice specialist care and ensuring optimal patient outcomes across the Clarence Network. You will play a central role in clinical governance, resource allocation, and inter departmental collaboration, while championing the training and wellbeing of doctors in your service. Your leadership will directly influence accreditation outcomes and the professional development of the next generation of clinicians.

The team benefits from strong multidisciplinary partnerships and a genuine culture of clinical excellence. You will have access to the resources and backing of a Local Health District that values innovation, education, and quality improvement - and the autonomy to put your own stamp on the department's direction and culture.
About the LocationThis role is based in a vibrant regional city nestled in one of New South Wales' most beautiful coastal hinterland regions - a place where breathtaking river landscapes, lush green valleys, and a warm subtropical climate combine to create an exceptional quality of life. The city itself has a rich cultural identity, with a thriving arts scene, heritage architecture, and a strong sense of community that is increasingly attracting professionals and families seeking a meaningful sea change without sacrificing career ambition. For families, the region offers excellent schooling options, wide open spaces, and the kind of safe, connected community feel that is increasingly rare. And with major centres accessible by road or air, you are never truly far from the city when you need it - but you may find you rarely do.
