The VirtualKIDS department are looking for a Temporary Staff Specialist to join their team at 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week) for a 12 month contract. This position is based within the Sydney Children's Hospital Network with regular travel to regional areas as per the position description.
The VirtualKIDS Staff Specialist Paediatrician (Rural and Regional Specialist Support) will work within Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) virtualKIDS to provide specialist paediatric outreach, virtual care and clinical capability support to designated regional and rural hospitals across NSW, including sites such as Goulburn Base Hospital.
The role will deliver an integrated model of care combining regular face-to-face outreach with ongoing virtual specialist support. The Staff Specialist will undertake a minimum continuous period of one week on site each month at the participating rural or regional hospital and contribute to the local paediatric service, including inpatient care, emergency consultation, outpatient activity, clinical handover and participation in the local paediatric on-call roster. These duties will be undertaken within the Staff Specialist’s approved scope of practice and in accordance with agreed credentialing, rostering and clinical governance arrangements. For the remainder of each month, the Staff Specialist will ordinarily be based at SCHN and provide scheduled and responsive virtual support to the regional site. This may include specialist consultation for children presenting to the acute review clinic, inpatient, outpatient and community services; virtual ward rounds and clinics; post-discharge review; advice regarding investigation, treatment and transfer; and coordination with SCHN subspecialty, retrieval and other tertiary services.
Additionally, the purpose of the position is to strengthen local paediatric capability and support the development of a sustainable regional workforce. The Staff Specialist will work collaboratively with local paediatricians, junior medical officers, nursing staff, allied health professionals and other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide education, clinical supervision, case-based learning and support for locally relevant clinical pathways. The role will promote shared decision-making, clear clinical accountability and effective communication between SCHN and the participating Local Health District.

The preferred applicant may be considered for the award of a conjoint academic title at a level commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. The award of the academic title will also confer membership upon the appointee of the relevant University. The academic title will be held for the duration of The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network for clinical matters.
- Eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Paediatrician and possession of Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or other qualifications recognised as equivalent.
- Demonstrated recent experience in general paediatrics appropriate to the role delineation of the participating service, including the assessment and management of children with acute, complex and chronic medical conditions.
- Demonstrated experience in paediatric acute care, consultation or service delivery through virtual care platforms. Experience supporting rural or regional health services is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary and cross-organisational teams, provide clinical leadership and develop effective partnerships with medical, nursing, allied health, primary care and community services.
- Demonstrated high-level written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including the effective use of information and communication technologies to support clinical consultation, documentation, handover and shared decision-making.
- Demonstrated commitment to clinical education, supervision and mentoring of junior medical officers and other multidisciplinary staff, together with continuing professional development, quality improvement, research and service evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to establish, implement and evaluate innovative models of care, manage clinical and operational change, and contribute to sustainable local workforce capability and integrated regional paediatric services.
- Availability and willingness to undertake regular travel and a minimum continuous period of one week on site each month, including participation in the local paediatric on-call and recall roster and other duties required by the role.

About The Opportunity
COPILOT is a dynamic and exciting service that provides rapid access to multi-disciplinary geriatric assessment (medical, nursing, and allied health) for older people living in the community setting. Referral enables care to be implemented in the patient’s home environment, whether that be in RACH's or their own homes, avoiding unnecessary transfer to hospital and leading to improved patient outcomes.
The COPILOT VMO will provide a high quality clinical service to older people and their families/carers to optimise health outcomes and support clients keeping well in the community. The VMO will provide comprehensive geriatric assessments and evidence-based care to clients residing in their own homes or nursing homes for acute care with the goal of avoiding unnecessary transfer to hospital.
The COPILOT VMO will need strong clinical leadership and decision making skills, have relevant clinical experience in the Aged Care speciality, and preferentially experience in providing community-based care both in a direct and virtual capacity. The position requires compliance with mandatory clinical administration duties, and participation in an on-call roster. The successful candidate should have strong communication skills, be efficient and have excellent time-management skills, and a willingness to join a supportive and dynamic multidisciplinary district-wide service.

What You'll be doing
Provide clinical management and treatment of patients in a SWSLHD facility under your care. This care will be provided within the clinical privileges granted by the CE on the advice of the SWSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

SWSLHD Primary & Community Health provides a comprehensive range of community-based services designed to improve and maintain the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities across South Western Sydney.
These services include prevention, early intervention, assessment, acute and post-acute treatment, health maintenance, and continuing care. The team supports diverse populations, offering specialised programs for children, young people, older adults, and at-risk communities.

High-Acuity and Diverse Clinical Practice

The Sexual Health Medicine Department within Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) offers junior doctors the opportunity to gain experience in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sexually transmissible infections (STIs), HIV medicine and broader sexual health care within a supportive multidisciplinary environment. Services are delivered through NSLHD's specialist Sexual Health Service, including Clinic 16 at Royal North Shore Hospital Community Health Centre.
Working alongside Sexual Health Physicians, Nurses, Counsellors and Allied Health professionals, trainees are involved in the assessment and management of a diverse patient population. The role provides exposure to HIV care, STI management, HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), preventive health programs and specialised clinics supporting priority populations.
This term offers valuable experience in outpatient medicine, patient counselling, public health, health promotion and multidisciplinary care. Trainees develop strong communication skills while managing a broad range of presentations in a confidential, inclusive and culturally safe clinical environment.

What you'll be doing
To provide effective clinical management of patients with Sexually Transmissible Infections, HIV, and other sexual
health needs, including provision of screening and biomedical prevention strategies, under appropriate supervision, including patient assessment, making treatment decisions, performing procedures and maintaining adequate medical records; and to develop expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. This includes the provision of professional advice and consultancy to outside agencies seeking information on STI/HIV infections. The Advanced Trainee's role includes participation in training program, peer education, clinical audits and research.
The Advanced Trainee is expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of, and at the discretion of the attending Sexual Health Physician.
This is a position recognised by the Australasia Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine (AChSHM, RACP) for training in sexual health medicine, and other Colleges (e.g RACP, RACGP, RACOG) by negotiation.
