About the role We are seeking an experienced Medical Scientist Grade 2 to support the day-to-day activities and coordination of the High Throughput Sequencing team, which delivers cancer genomics next-generation sequencing (NGS) molecular testing for patients at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and for our external clients.

A regular day will see you:

• Applying your knowledge of NGS assays and sequencing technologies to provide technical guidance and support to staff within the HTS team.
• Assisting with the investigation and resolution of assay, workflow, and instrument issues, escalating where required.

Overview:

The Victorian AYA Cancer Service is a state-wide initiative aimed at improving the delivery of high-quality care for young Victorians diagnosed with cancer.

Embedded within the service, the The My Room Adolescent & Young Adult Oncology Fellow position offers a unique opportunity to gain specialised experience and training in AYA Oncology. The fellowship provides broad exposure in the care of young people across multiple tumour streams including sarcoma, testicular cancer and brain tumours, as well as participation in the AYA transition program. A strong emphasis is placed on developing skills in developmentally appropriate, age specific oncological care. The role offers excellent opportunities for AYA specific clinical experience, research, teaching and education. There are also opportunities to lead research and/or quality improvement projects under the supervision of the Adolescent & Young Adult Oncology Leadership Team. The fellowship is open to both paediatric and adult oncology trainees and is suitable to be used for the Paediatric Developmental and Psychosocial mandatory training term or Non-core adult training requirements.

Victorians nearing their end of life who meet defined eligibility criteria are able to request assessment for Voluntary Assisted Dying under the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017.

The Voluntary Assisted Dying Care Navigators are a small team of highly skilled clinicians. They are a point of contact for members of the public, health practitioners and health services across Victoria seeking information or support in accessing or delivering Voluntary Assisted Dying. The navigator service works with any health service or clinician, individual or family who seeks their input.

There are two key deliverables - 1) one-to-one support to individuals and families, and 2) building skills and capacity in the broader health service in supporting people in their care who want information or access to voluntary assisted dying.

The Navigators

• Provide information and practical support to people, carers and families, tailored to an individual's circumstances, including identifying appropriate VAD referral pathways.
• Support VAD assessing medical practitioners to navigate and comply with legislated processes.
• Support the development of skills and capacity within the allocated region through ongoing professional education, supporting health services to develop, review or implement appropriate policies and procedures.
• Identify local service gaps and contribute to improvement activities within the region and broader service as required.

Skills

• Essential Requirements - Tertiary qualification in a health related field
• Essential Requirements - Relevant professional registration (e.g. AHPRA)
• Essential Requirements - Advanced communication skills (written, verbal and non-verbal) and strong interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with a wide range of people and services
• Essential Requirements - Demonstrated ability to apply adaptable problem solving, critical thinking and sound decision making
• Essential Requirements - Ability to work independently and prioritise workload in a fluctuating environment
