Avenel Equine Hospital is in the heart of Victoria's thoroughbred breeding region about an hour north of Melbourne and provides multidisciplinary specialist services alongside a comprehensive ambulatory service to our local clients. The hospital team consists of European and American recognised veterinary specialists in internal medicine and surgery with a wealth of experience in equine surgery, medicine, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, lameness, and reproduction. The veterinary team is supported by nursing, stable, and laboratory staff. With the benefits of a first-class purpose-built hospital and on-site laboratory, our team provides 24-hour specialist care for horses.

THE ROLEWe are seeking motivated veterinary graduates striving for excellence in equine practice to work in all areas of our hospital. Our interns play an integral role in the care of hospitalised patients, admission of emergencies and daily management of cases under supervision of our senior veterinarians.
REQUIREMENTS- Veterinary degree and ability to register with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of Victoria
- English language competency in line with registration requirements
- Eligibility for Australian work visa if non-resident
- Excellent communication skills and effective team worker able to prioritise and follow well documented processes and procedures
- Prior student placement at equine hospitals within Australia or overseas
- Gain extensive experience of equine surgery, foal and adult medicine, lameness, diagnostic imaging, critical care and anaesthesia through involvement in a large and diverse caseload
- Supervised and supported by specialists and senior veterinarians for on call duties
- Structured and mentored internship program rotating through anaesthesia, medicine, and surgery
- Active involvement in the Group wide continued education
- Provided AVA / EVA memberships and funded CPD allowance
- Accommodation available if required

We have a seasonal position available for an equine medicine specialist ("DipECEIM, DipACVIM or Australian Fellow") in our ICU, commencing August 2027. We are particularly looking for someone with skills in critical care and neonatology. The position will be primarily hospital based with occasional visits on to local stud farms to provide second opinion consultations. The successful applicant will work alongside three other equine medicine specialists to provide a high level of veterinary care to critically ill neonatal foals, adult horses and post-operative patients. We admit approximately 1,000 cases to the ICU per year, of which 150-200 are critically ill neonatal foals. The on-call roster is currently a 1 in 4 for weeknights and weekends.
About the FacilityScone Equine Hospital is the largest equine veterinary practice in Australia, employing approximately 40 equine veterinarians during the breeding season. We have support from five specialists in equine surgery, one specialist in theriogenology, associate veterinarians, a medicine fellow, interns, and a large team of experienced equine nurses.
EquipmentAvailable equipment includes a neonatal ventilator, nasal high flow, a 3m video-gastroscope, video-endoscopy, dynamic endoscopy, diode laser, three ultrasound machines with Doppler, telemetric ECG, digital radiography, CT, and full diagnostic laboratory.
LocationScone is in the heart of the Thoroughbred breeding industry in Australia. It is a beautiful part of rural Australia located close to major regional cities and is approximately 3 hrs drive north of Sydney.
RequirementsThe applicant must meet the necessary requirements to be registered with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of New South Wales.
SalarySalary is commensurate with abilities and experience.
