About the team The Molecular Pathology Laboratory in the Department of Pathology is recognised for its leading role in molecular and genomic diagnostic testing, supporting personalised cancer treatment and clinical trials. The team works with advanced technologies, with a strong focus on continuous improvement, collaboration, and timely patient results.
About the role We are seeking an experienced Medical Scientist Grade 2 to support the day-to-day activities and coordination of the High Throughput Sequencing team, which delivers cancer genomics next-generation sequencing (NGS) molecular testing for patients at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and for our external clients.
A regular day will see you:
- Applying your knowledge of NGS assays and sequencing technologies to provide technical guidance and support to staff within the HTS team.
- Assisting with the investigation and resolution of assay, workflow, and instrument issues, escalating where required.
- Monitor laboratory performance data, QC metrics, and sequencing outputs to ensure assays and instrumentation meet required standards.
- Assist with the coordination of daily team operations, including rostering and scheduling, and communication with other teams in the Molecular Pathology Department.
- Support the training and development of staff within the HTS team.
- Ensure work within the HTS team is performed in accordance with laboratory quality systems and accreditation requirements.

You hold a relevant science degree and ideally bring experience in next generation sequencing or diagnostic molecular pathology within an accredited laboratory setting.

Position Summary To support the Molecular Pathology Laboratory to provide the highest quality of molecular services to the patients of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and its external clients: Key duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Participation in all areas of preanalytical and assay setup including but not limited to Sanger sequencing, MLPSA, NGS workflows, ddPCR, HRM etc
- Maintain knowledge of medical/scientific literature relevant to the laboratory's testing programme.
- Training & proficiency sign-off of staff in new methodologies
- Supervision of technical staff within section
- Automation and streamlining of wet lab workflows
- Development and application of innovative methods and new technologies
- Preparation and maintenance of standard operating procedures
- Quality management and maintenance of accreditation
- Awareness & adherence to Occupational Health and Safety policies
- Contribution to assay development.
- Ethically conducting all duties

What You'll Achieve- Lead the MST and training environment strategy which will include maintenance and build, access and training in MST (Epic's Training environment)

The Birth Centre and Assessment Centre provides pregnancy, labour, and birth services to theRoyal Women's Hospital. Our focus is on providing high quality, woman centred midwifery and obstetric care to women and newborns. The Birth Centre and Assessment Centre services are provided by a muldisciplinary team which include a team of Core Birth Centre Midwives.
About the roleAs a Core Birth Centre Midwife you will be responsible forproviding collegial and collaborative clinical support to the multidisciplinary team working in the Birth Centre and Assessment Centre.
A regular day will see you:
- Provide and support direct patient care for all women accessing the Birth Centre / Assessment Centre
- Collaborate effectively and in a timely manner with medical staff in the provision of care, as well as other departments.
- Promote a culture within the Birth Centre which values multidisciplinary collaboration, clinical excellence, individualised care, and midwifery-led care where appropriate.
You will be someone with excellent communication skills, a positive and inclusive attitude, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
You'll bring with you:
- Relevant clinical experience, ideally 5 years consolidated Birth Centre experienceOR a commitment to consolidating yourBirth Centre / Assessment Centre skills and experience.
- Competence in advanced midwifery skills or evidence of working towards or willing to achieve these skills within 6-12 months of appointment (skills include: IV cannulation, ARM, FSE application, administration of PGE2 administration, insertion of cervical ripening balloon catheter, speculum examination, water immersion for labour and birth, perineal suturing, and newborn examination).
- Passion for provision of exceptional midwifery care for all women attending Birth Centre / Assessment Centre, including women seeking termination of pregnancy services.

About the role:As an Associate Unit Manager (AUM) within Maternity, you will work collaboratively with the Midwife Unit Managers (MUM) to provide leadership and support to the maternity team, and lead the delivery of care to women and their families. You'll support the administrative operation of the department, as well as clinical management of the service.
A regular day will see you:
- Participates as an active member of the management team by providing clinical, supervisory, managerial and collegial support to the Midwifery Management Team.
- Ensuring provision of high quality care in accordance with the Women's Clinical Practice Guidelines, scope of practice and legislative requirements.
- Liaise with the Access Manager/After Hours Manager and other staff members as required
- Act as a supportive and positive role model, providing constructive learning experiences and coaching opportunities, and facilitate individual and team goals
- Respect the dignity, culture, values and beliefs of women and significant others in the provision of culturally sensitive midwifery care
You will be someone with strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build collaborative working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. You'll have excellent problem-solving capability, and take a flexible and adaptable approach to your work.
To be successful in this role you'll bring with you:
- Midwife Registration with AHPRA and Level 3 practitioner in RANZCOG Fetal Surveillance Education Program
- Four (4) years relevant clinical Midwifery experience across the continuum of midwifery care
- Ability, or willingness, to work across the midwifery continuum (antenatal ward, postnatal ward, and birth centre) across all shifts on a rotating roster
- Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritise, and time manage
- Have a high level of responsibility and accountability
- A demonstrated commitment to family-centred care and advocacy
- Demonstrate clinical leadership skills while promoting ongoing learning and education for all staff in the team contributing to a positive staff morale and team cohesiveness
- Prioritise collaborative care and communication within the multidisciplinary framework
