At Nepean Hospital there is a dedicated team responsible for management of all patients with acute surgical conditions within the hospital itself as well as the neighbouring hospitals with the NBMLHD, known as the Acute Surgical Unit. ASU is an independent unit that manages all acute surgical admissions including trauma and is led by an on-site ASU Consultant during daylight hours and on-call overnight, responsible for management of all patients with acute surgical conditions.
Nepean Hospital is one of the two Alma Mater Hospitals of the RACS Western Sydney Network with SET Trainees rotations to other hospitals within NSW. These Hospitals include: Nepean, Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Westmead, Norwest, Orange, Dubbo, Bathurst, and Hawkesbury.
We are planning to make a 6-month regional rotation in general surgery to Moruya Hospital as part of the terms offered for the Trainee Unaccredited position. Moruya is a hospital with 4 general surgeons, providing care on the picturesque south coast of NSW, and is a fantastic opportunity to broaden our Trainee’s exposure to rural surgery. Accommodation and travel allowance will be provided.
See the Inaugural Nepean Surgical Skills Education Evening which covered laparoscopic and open surgical techniques and highlighted the importance of simulation-based education in surgical training.

- Day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in the Unit under supervision of the consultant in charge/fellow.
- Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate, arranging discharge and liaising with local medical officers and other community based care modalities.
- Participating in the afterhours and relief roster.
Where you'll be working
- Unaccredited Trainees in General Surgery will work in the Acute Surgical Unit, and/or attached to an elective General Surgery Unit at Nepean Hospital, Elective Surgical Unit at Blue Mountains Hospital or Elective or Emergency Surgical Care at Hawkesbury Hospital.
- All terms will be three months and each trainee will rotate. A minimum of 26 weeks of general surgery will be allocated. There will be an opportunity to rotate to an ICU term. There will also be an opportunity to spend a term working with the Thoracic Surgery Unit at Nepean Hospital.
- Nepean Hospital has its own night surgical trainees. These trainees are on-ground, working 1900-0700 shifts 7 days on - 7 days off. Unaccredited Trainees working within the ASU will be rostered at some time for both in-hours shifts and after-hours shifts rotating as the night surgical trainee.

About Our Department
We deliver comprehensive specialist care for patients with complex and often undifferentiated medical presentations. Services span:
• General Medicine inpatient care
• Acute Medical Unit (AMU) services
• Consultative medicine across the hospital
• Perioperative medicine
• Ambulatory and outpatient services
• Telehealth and outreach activities
• Teaching and supervision of medical students, junior doctors and physician trainees
Our Acute Medical Unit is focused on the rapid assessment and early management of patients presenting from the Emergency Department, supporting timely decision-making, multidisciplinary care and efficient patient flow.
General Medicine specialists provide broad internal medicine expertise across the hospital and play an important role in caring for patients with multiple co-morbidities and complex diagnostic challenges.
