Staff Specialist in General and Acute Medicine, John Hunter Hospital
Build an outstanding medical career at John Hunter Hospital, where complex medicine, academic opportunity and genuine lifestyle balance come together.
We are recruiting for multiple Staff Specialist positions within General and Acute Medicine.
Opportunities are available across a range of full-time and part-time appointments (up to 1.0 FTE), with fixed-term contracts available from 12 to 24 months.
For the right physicians, we are committed to exploring flexible appointment arrangements that align with individual career aspirations and departmental needs.
Join our Department of General and Acute Medicine at John Hunter Hospital, the major tertiary referral centre for the Hunter, New England and Northern NSW regions. As part of a large, collaborative physician workforce, you will help us provide expert medical care across inpatient, consultative, ambulatory and acute care settings while contributing to teaching, research, clinical leadership and service innovation.
Whether your passion lies in the broad scope of General Medicine, the fast-paced environment of Acute Medicine, or a combination of both, this role offers the opportunity to practise contemporary medicine at scale while helping shape services for a growing and diverse patient population.
About Our Department

• Acute Medical Unit (AMU) services
• Consultative medicine across the hospital
• Perioperative medicine
• Ambulatory and outpatient services
• Telehealth and outreach activities
• Teaching and supervision of medical students, junior doctors and physician trainees
Our Acute Medical Unit is focused on the rapid assessment and early management of patients presenting from the Emergency Department, supporting timely decision-making, multidisciplinary care and efficient patient flow.
General Medicine specialists provide broad internal medicine expertise across the hospital and play an important role in caring for patients with multiple co-morbidities and complex diagnostic challenges.
Why John Hunter Hospital?
We are the largest tertiary referral centre in regional New South Wales and serves communities across the Hunter, New England, Mid North Coast and Northern NSW. The hospital is recognised as:

• Australia's only major trauma centre outside a capital city
• A key teaching site of the University of Newcastle
• Co-located with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), providing strong opportunities for research and academic collaboration
We are entering an exciting new chapter with the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct redevelopment, one of the largest health infrastructure investments in regional Australia. Our redevelopment includes a new acute services building, expanded emergency and critical care services, additional operating theatres and enhanced links between clinical care, education and research, opening in November 2026.
The Opportunity
As a Staff Specialist, you will:
• Manage a diverse and intellectually rewarding case mix across General and Acute Medicine
• Participate in Acute Medical Unit and inpatient services
• Deliver high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centred care
• Work alongside a highly skilled multidisciplinary team
• Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement and service development
• Supervise and mentor medical students, junior doctors and Basic and Advanced Physician Trainees
• Engage in research, innovation and the translation of evidence into clinical practice
• Help shape the future direction of medical services across the region
Who We're Looking For

Applicants will hold:
• Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in General Medicine and/or an appropriate subspecialty - Dual-trained physicians and applicants nearing completion of fellowship training are encouraged to apply.
• Specialist registration, or eligibility for specialist registration, with AHPRA
