With modern facilities and a strong focus on patient-centred care, the hospital provides an excellent environment for nurses to develop their clinical expertise while working alongside experienced multidisciplinary teams. The hospital’s rehabilitation services support patients throughout their recovery journey, helping them regain independence and achieve their individual health and wellbeing goals.
The Position
We are seeking a passionate and motivated Registered Nurse to join our dynamic 30-bed Oncology and Medical Ward at St John of God Ballarat Hospital on a permanent full-time or part-time basis.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a supportive and collaborative team providing high-quality, patient-centred care to patients with a range of oncology and medical conditions. You will have the opportunity to further develop your skills across clinical assessment, care planning, symptom management, medication administration and the delivery of compassionate, evidence-based nursing care.
We are particularly interested in Registered Nurses with oncology nursing experience, as well as those with a strong acute nursing background who have an interest in developing their skills and knowledge in oncology. Training and development opportunities are available to support you in building your oncology nursing capability.
As an inpatient ward, this role provides the opportunity to care for patients across the full spectrum of their hospital journey, including admission, treatment, symptom management, recovery and discharge planning. The role involves working across a 24-hour roster, including night duty.
If you are a dynamic and flexible Registered Nurse with strong communication skills, sound clinical judgement and a passion for providing high-quality care to patients with complex healthcare needs, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities

- Complete comprehensive clinical assessments and develop, implement and evaluate individualised care plans.
- Monitor patients' clinical conditions, assess symptoms and respond appropriately to changes in their health and wellbeing.
- Administer medications safely and effectively in accordance with clinical guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Support patients experiencing treatment-related side effects, pain and other symptoms, escalating concerns where required.
- Provide nursing care to patients with complex oncology and medical conditions throughout their inpatient stay.
- Work collaboratively with medical practitioners, oncology specialists, allied health professionals and the wider multidisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
- Provide education, emotional support and guidance to patients and their families throughout their hospital journey.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and provide clear, timely clinical handover.
- Support effective discharge planning and continuity of care, liaising with patients, families and relevant healthcare providers.
- Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control, medication safety and clinical governance.
- Contribute to a positive team culture and deliver an exceptional patient experience.
- Participate in a 24-hour roster, including night duty, to support the ongoing care needs of the ward.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Well-developed clinical assessment, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide safe, compassionate and patient-centred care in an acute oncology and medical environment. You will demonstrate sound clinical judgement, strong prioritisation and problem-solving skills, together with a commitment to teamwork, clinical excellence and supporting patients with complex healthcare needs.
You will hold current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse, along with recent clinical experience in an acute healthcare environment.
Previous oncology nursing experience will be highly regarded, particularly experience caring for patients with complex cancer diagnoses and treatment-related needs. We also welcome Registered Nurses with strong acute medical or surgical experience who have an interest in developing their career in oncology nursing and are willing to undertake relevant skills training.
Availability to work across a 24-hour roster, including night duty, is required.
