About CSIRO
As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Many of our iconic innovations were once considered impossible until someone, just like you, joined us and took on the challenge.
CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness ( ACDP ) in Geelong is a nationally significant high-containment facility protecting Australia from serious and emerging animal and zoonotic disease threats. Our teams work across research, surveillance, diagnostics and emergency response, helping safeguard Australia's animal industries, environment and communities.
This is a pivotal time to join ACDP. A major Part-Life Refit is modernising laboratories, infrastructure and animal research capability to support the Centre's critical work for decades to come at the Geelong site. Your high-level duties will include:
- Lead animal welfare and biorisk management officers to deliver expert advice and support best-practice animal care and compliant research.
- Oversee compliance and microbiological security requirements for research involving biosecurity goods, genetically modified organisms and security-sensitive biological agents.
- Coordinate transparent external and internal audits across ACDP, ensuring non-compliance is reported appropriately and corrective actions are implemented.
- Support adverse-event investigations, advise on animal welfare interventions and report outcomes and recommended actions to relevant committees and authorities.
- Collaborate with research, facility and quality teams to develop consistent procedures, policies and compliance frameworks across ACDP.
- Partner with the Animal Research Ethics Team to align practices with CSIRO's Animal Welfare Procedure and the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.
- Provide expert regulatory guidance and contribute to training in technical procedures, animal welfare and animal ethics across CSIRO.
- Contribute to biorisk management leadership, advise on emerging compliance and welfare matters, and foster inclusion, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
Location: Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), Geelong, VIC
Salary: AU$135k - AU$158k per annum + 15.4% superannuation

CSIRO acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land, sea and waters, of the area that we live and work on across Australia. We acknowledge their continuing connection to their culture and pay our respects to their Elders past and present. View our vision towards reconciliation .
Role highlights- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary veterinary and animal welfare team supporting nationally significant science
- Combine senior leadership with hands-on veterinary and scientific expertise in ACDP's high-containment research environment
- Join ACDP during major investment in modern laboratories, infrastructure and animal research capability
You'll have the opportunity to contribute to science with genuine national impact-helping Australia anticipate, detect and respond to serious biosecurity threats such as lumpy skin disease, African swine fever and avian influenza. Whether your role supports research, diagnostics, surveillance, animal care, laboratory operations or critical infrastructure, your work can strengthen Australia's preparedness, protect animal health and industries, and help reduce risks to the environment and community. You'll also build distinctive experience in a complex, highly regulated environment unlike conventional veterinary, animal-care or laboratory practice.
The role:
As an Animal Studies Operations Leader, lead the veterinary and animal studies operations at CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), where your expertise will help enable nationally significant research into emerging infectious diseases, animal health and biosecurity. You'll lead a multidisciplinary team of veterinary and animal welfare professionals, combining people leadership with hands on veterinary and scientific expertise to deliver high-quality animal care, research support, workforce capability and operational excellence. Working alongside researchers and specialist teams, you'll help shape safe, ethical and scientifically robust animal research while contributing to preparedness programs that protect Australia and the region from serious disease threats.
Animal research at ACDP takes place within rigorous animal ethics, biosecurity, safety and regulatory frameworks. Depending on the role, you may support animals throughout the research lifecycle, including infectious disease research. Candidates must be comfortable working in an environment where animals may not be able to leave the facility and where humane euthanasia may form part of approved research or biosecurity requirements.
Where you will make an impact:- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary veterinary and animal welfare team, fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture across ACDP's animal facilities.
- Provide strategic and technical leadership across veterinary services, animal health, welfare and animal studies operations.
- Apply your veterinary and clinical expertise to animal-based research, including health assessments, disease investigations, surgery, diagnostic procedures and emergency veterinary care.
- Partner with researchers to provide veterinary input into study design, animal ethics, husbandry, clinical monitoring and implementation of animal research projects.
- Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement, including capability development, technical training and high standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, quality and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate across scientific, veterinary, animal welfare and facility teams to enable safe, ethical and scientifically robust research, including supporting ACDP's after-hours and emergency response requirements.
- Tenure & work schedule: Indefinite. Role is predominantly site-based
- Applications are open to Australian Citizens only.
- Appointment is subject to obtaining or holding an Australian Government Negative Vetting 1 security clearance and providing a national police check. Other security, medical or character requirements may also apply.

Selection criteria:- A veterinary degree eligible for registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria with a minimum of five years' veterinary experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in managing teams, developing staff capability and fostering a positive, high-performing workplace culture.
- Demonstrated experience applying veterinary knowledge and professional judgement to support animal health, clinical care, disease investigations, and animal management within veterinary, research, diagnostic, or related environments.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to build productive relationships, prepare technical documentation and reports, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of animal welfare, ethical animal use, and regulatory requirements relevant to the care and use of animals for scientific purposes,
- Willingness to work with zoonotic or exotic disease agents, including within high-containment environments following appropriate training.

About the role
Broaden your clinical range. Deepen your acute-care confidence. Build a platform for senior practice.
If hands-on acute care is your style, Parkes ED gives you the environment to become a highly capable rural emergency nurse — varied presentations, genuine acuity, a spacious modern resuscitation area, onsite medical support around the clock, and development pathways that can turn experience into career
This is an Emergency Department for nurses who want to keep sharpening their clinical judgement. You will see a broad mix of presentations and work in a regional hospital where clinical versatility counts. Rural emergency nursing asks you to think broadly, respond calmly and understand the wider clinical picture. At Parkes, you have the infrastructure and professional backing to build that capability with confidence.
Parkes Hospital opened in 2015, creating a modern regional health service with contemporary clinical spaces and equipment. The ED includes five treatment beds plus a spacious resuscitation bay, within a hospital with a 27-bed inpatient facility. The department is bright, open and visually impressive for a regional hospital of its size. When a patient deteriorates and the team needs to move quickly, the resus area gives clinicians room to assess, escalate, communicate and deliver care efficiently when every movement counts.
For metropolitan nurses considering a regional move, one detail matters enormously: Parkes has onsite medical support 24 hours a day across the ED and ward. You can embrace the breadth and autonomy of rural emergency nursing without stepping away from direct medical backup. When presentations become complex or acuity escalates, the doctor is onsite. That gives you the reassurance to make the move and the clinical environment to keep extending your practice.
Parkes Health Service also has the infrastructure to support acute care, including medical imaging with CT, ultrasound and X-ray, pathology with point-of-care testing, an onsite helipad and after-hours emergency surgical cover. The wider service includes inpatient care, maternity, chemotherapy, surgery, ambulatory care, rehabilitation and palliative care, giving the ED an important role within a well-connected regional hospital.
The professional opportunity extends beyond the next shift.
Parkes has clinical nurse educators working across the ED and inpatient unit, with education embedded into the service rather than treated as an optional extra. Nurses are supported to build the evidence and experience required for progression, including opportunities to work toward personal regrading to Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 1.
There are also pathways into education, quality improvement, research and leadership. CNS nurses can gain relieving management experience, and nurses interested in taking on greater responsibility can develop the skills required to coordinate care, contribute to service improvement and step into more senior roles over time.
That makes Parkes particularly attractive for an experienced clinician who wants the next move to count. You are not simply changing locations. You are building clinical range, deepening acute-care confidence and creating a platform for senior practice.
The team values communication, teamwork and flexibility. Patient advocacy is central to the way the department operates: recognising what a patient needs, speaking up when it matters and making sure the person behind the presentation does not get lost in the pace of an ED shift.
The practical details are good too. Parkes Hospital offers free onsite parking and a cafe, while inpatient rooms provide a contemporary environment with their own bathrooms and televisions. These details add up to a health service designed to work well for patients, families and staff.
A regional lifestyle with room to move. Parkes is a thriving Central West town with the services and opportunities of a regional centre, while still offering the ease, affordability and connection that make a country move worthwhile.
It is home to around 12,000 people and has a diverse local economy supported by mining, government, agriculture and scientific employers. Parkes is also known nationally for the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope — famously known as The Dish — and the Parkes Elvis Festival, which transforms the town each January.
For families, there are schools, sport, community groups and the space to build a life outside work. For clinicians moving from a metropolitan area, Parkes offers something increasingly difficult to find: professional momentum without the long commute, expensive parking and constant pressure of city living.
With a median house price around $470,000, Parkes remains an achievable option for nurses who want more space, greater affordability and a regional lifestyle without stepping away from meaningful clinical work.
Relocation support may also be available through the NSW Government’s Welcome Experience, a free service helping eligible essential workers and their families settle into regional NSW. Local Connectors can assist with practical support such as housing, childcare, partner employment and community connections.
If you want a regional ED role that builds real acute-care capability, gives you direct onsite medical support, and opens a practical pathway into senior clinical practice, Parkes is ready for you. Challenge yourself. Make an impact. Shape the future. Join us!
