Executive Director of Medical Services | A defining appointment for a qualified medical leader
Skilled Medical View all jobs
Posted 1 month(s) ago
Reference: LCLHN EDMS
This is a full-time executive appointment based in Mount Gambier, South Australia, with Limestone Coast Local Health Network (LCLHN) — the only "mini-metro" of South Australia's regional Local Health Networks.
Limestone Coast Local Health Network (LCLHN) is seeking an outstanding clinical leader for the role of Executive Director of Medical Services (EDMS).
This is a rare opportunity to lead the medical portfolio of a high-performing regional health service that combines the clinical breadth of a metropolitan hospital with the lifestyle of one of South Australia's most scenic coastal regions.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the EDMS is a member of the LCLHN Executive and provides medical leadership across eight sites serving a catchment of 69,000 people.
As Executive Director of Medical Services, you will:
Provide strategic and operational leadership for the medical workforce, clinical governance, quality/risk/safety, and clinical research portfolios across LCLHN.
Lead the continued expansion of the medical workforce and help drive the hub-and-spoke model of care.
Champion clinical training and academic partnerships, including the Flinders University affiliation and the delivery of LCLHN's five-year Clinical Research Strategy to 2031.
Provide visible, values-based leadership to medical staff, supporting safe, high-quality, patient-centred care across Mount Gambier & Districts Health Service and district sites.
Partner with the Chief Clinical Advisor, executive colleagues, SA Health, universities, colleges and community stakeholders on coordinated, high-quality care.
Provide expert advice to the CEO and Governing Board on medical services, clinical workforce planning, and clinical priorities.
Direct reports include the Director of Medical Services (MGDHS), Medical Leads, Manager Quality/Risk/Safety, and Director of Clinical Training.
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
Registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA and Fellowship of RACMA (or equivalent specialist qualification acceptable to the Medical Board of Australia).
Extensive executive leadership experience in medical services, clinical governance and medical workforce strategy within a complex health service.
A demonstrated track record of leading service redesign, models of care and change management that improve patient, workforce and organisational outcomes.
Proven ability to engage and influence senior clinicians, executives, boards, universities, colleges and government stakeholders.
A strong commitment to clinical training, research and workforce development — particularly in a regional/rural setting.
The integrity, judgement and interpersonal capability expected of a senior executive leader.
Total Remuneration Package: up to AUD $567,114
Inclusive of MD029G consultant base salary, managerial allowance, leave loading, 1:2 on-call at 11.5%, professional development allowance, 30% regional attraction & retention allowance, and superannuation. A full remuneration breakdown is available.

The Position
Lead medical services across South Australia’s most expansive health region — the Eyre Peninsula and Far North.
The EDMS is a foundational leadership appointment, accountable to the Chief Executive Officer and a member of the LHN Leadership Team. The role sets the medical strategy across eleven hospital sites and one of the highest proportions of First Nations residents in the state.
Lead recruitment, credentialing and orientation of Medical Officers, registrars and locums across the LHN. Steward scope of practice under SA Health policy and support the regional workforce to achieve college and Medical Board competencies.
Own clinical governance for safe, high-quality medical care across eleven sites. Coordinate resident and visiting specialists, SMOs, GPs, SA Ambulance, SA Retrieval and Rural & Remote Mental Health — implementing the SA Health Clinical Services Capability Framework across a vast footprint.
Provide oversight and strategic direction for Clinical Trials and Research across the network, developing research governance aligned to the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework and building a learning culture in teaching and quality improvement.
Health Service
The Eyre and Far North Local Health Network stewards hospital, aged care, community, disability and mental health services for 41,000 residents across 337,626 square kilometres — from Cowell on the eastern Eyre Peninsula, west to the Western Australian border, and north to the Northern Territory.
The Location
Port Lincoln sits at the tip of the Eyre Peninsula — one of South Australia’s premier travel destinations and Australia’s seafood capital. Untamed coastline, immersive wildlife, white-sand beaches and cellar-door country roads sit alongside a strong, welcoming community. A rare place to lead a big region — and still be home for dinner by the water.

- Registered Medical Practitioner (AHPRA), unrestricted. ·
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (or eligibility).
- At least 5 years’ senior experience in Medical Administration in an Australian hospital.
- Demonstrated leadership across matrixed clinical environments and remote services.
- Deep commitment to Aboriginal cultural safety and rural healthcare.
