Leongatha Optometrists is looking for an Optometrist to join its independent, two-room practice for four days per week.
This opportunity offers the security of consistent hours from the outset, initially combining approximately two days of consulting with two days supporting optical dispensing. You'll also remain involved in dispensing for your own patients, providing continuity from the consulting room through to their eyewear selection.
As you establish your patient base and consulting demand grows, the balance of the role is expected to shift progressively towards more clinical optometry. This is not intended to remain a fixed 50/50 structure; it is an opportunity to build towards a broader consulting workload within an established practice.
Broad-scope optometry with room to developLeongatha Optometrists has cared for the local community and surrounding Gippsland region for more than 45 years.
The practice provides broad-scope primary eye care to patients across all ages, with particular clinical interests in:
- Dry eye disease and treatment
- General ocular disease diagnosis and management
- Ongoing eye-health management
- Soft contact lenses
- Rigid and more complex contact lens fitting, where clinically appropriate
You'll have the scope to practise general optometry while developing your own areas of clinical interest.
The practice continues to invest in its clinical services and technology, with equipment including:
- Visual field testing
- Oculus corneal topography
- Wavefront autorefractors, including a handheld unit
- iCare tonometry
- Digital and manual phoropters
- Low-level light therapy and Blephasteam for dry eye management
Alongside your consulting work, you'll help patients translate their clinical recommendations into suitable lens and eyewear choices.
The practice is supported each day by the Optometrist/owner and Practice Manager, with an experienced Optical Dispenser also working four days per week. You'll therefore have support around you while still being encouraged to contribute your ideas and develop professionally.
You may be an experienced Optometrist looking for greater variety or a new graduate ready to commence during 2026.
You'll bring:
- Eligibility for registration as an Optometrist in Australia
- An interest in broad-scope primary care optometry
- A willingness to contribute across both consulting and optical dispensing
- Clear, considered communication with patients and colleagues
- A genuine interest in building trusted, ongoing patient relationships
New graduates are encouraged to apply, provided they are available to begin in 2026.
For an Optometrist who values clinical variety but also enjoys being involved beyond the consulting room, this role offers somewhere meaningful to begin, and genuine scope to make more of the clinical work your own over time.

Testimonialfrom our team
I had the privilege of working for Dr Tara before relocating to Rockhampton, Central Queenslandin 2021 due to my husband's work commitments. Since that time, I have maintained a strongrelationship with the Midwest family, returning as a locum on an
as-needs basis.
My first experience of working at Midwest coincided with the very recent purchase of the practiceby Dr Tara and Practice Manager Nat. From the outset they established a work culture that wasbuilt on collaborative trust and appreciation of each team member. Professionally, this was madeevident in the way staff were trained across a wide range of skills with full support given for furthersharpening of people's special interest areas. It was also made evident by careful rosteringfocussed on ensuring that vets and nurses alike had a sustainable work life that allowed space torefresh and spend time with family and friends.
As a vet coming into a new position, I immediately felt part of the team due to the warm welcomefrom the nurses and vets who generously and patiently shared their knowledge of the clinic's day to-day workings with me. At all times, Dr Tara made herself available if I needed support orguidance - an essential for any vet joining a practice, regardless of their level of prior experience. At no time did I feel uncertain of my role due to the pre-work of Nat and Tara in providing me witha clear, transparent contractual agreement that was adhered to.
Midwest's reputation as a provider of consistent, high-quality compassionate care has led to itbeing the clinic of choice for a large client base. The compact premises has been maximised toensure a smooth daily work flow. Clarity of roles and clear communication at the daily morningteam meeting ensures a work day that can absorb the inevitable urgent walk-in appointment.
The use of integrated veterinary software technologies such as EzyVet and SmartFlow allows ahighly visible and streamlined daily work flow and ensures seamless patient management. Igreatly appreciated Midwest's commitment to paperless technology in my capacity as locum dueto the accelerated familiarity it provides with day-to-day practice protocols and workings.
As a vet at Midwest, no day is the same which is highly intentional. In consultation with Dr Tara, vets may move between large animal call-outs and small animal consultations, as befitsexperience and preference. For those like myself who are small animal focussed, there is stillnourishing variety. One may enjoy a full day of client interactions one day - then the next clotheoneself in surgery scrubs to emerge at the end of the day refreshed from a day of satisfyingsurgeries and conversations with colleagues.
As the sole provider of after-hours care for 70,000 people - to work at Midwest is to engage withthe out-of-the-ordinary. The high uptake of after-hours consultations by the Midwest communityprovides on-call vets and nurses the opportunity to meet people at times of great stress withcompassion and the offer of prompt, skilful veterinary care. On-call opportunities are sharedbetween vets and nurses, and next-day responsibilities carefully managed in light of what theprevious shift brought with it.
As a vet with over 25 years experience, my observation is that when the inevitable work-colleagueor client-based interpersonal hiccup occurs, the key to rapid resolution lies with the managementteam. Practices whose boss and practice manager are present and fully engaged with the day-to day workings of the practice are well-positioned to guide team members through such times. DrTara and Nat have intentionally positioned themselves in the heart of the clinic, sharing the sameworkspace as their team every day thereby ensuring prompt accessibility and prompt resolutionof such stressors.
My current boss (for whom I have happily worked for the past 6 years) is fully supportive of myongoing intention of locuming at Midwest on a semi-regular basis. She loves that I returnenergised and with a renewed enthusiasm for providing high quality veterinary care to regionalcommunities. She also enjoys the opportunity of hearing about how "things are done" at a clinicthat shares her fierce commitment to providing high-quality care across all realms of veterinarysurgery and medicine within a regional context.
