The NPSN is a dedicated nursing role introduced to strengthen our model of care for women, newborns and families. Working on our postnatal wards, you will provide nursing care to newborns who require additional clinical support, helping mothers and babies remain together wherever clinically appropriate.
You’ll work alongside experienced midwives, neonatal clinicians and the broader multidisciplinary team – bringing your established nursing skills while developing new capability in neonatal care.
About the Role
As an NPSN, you will provide dedicated nursing care to newborns who require additional monitoring, treatment or support on the postnatal ward.
Your role may include caring for:
- Low birth weight and late preterm babies
- Babies requiring blood glucose monitoring and hypoglycaemia management
- Babies receiving phototherapy
- Babies requiring IV antibiotics
- Newborns requiring additional assessment, observation and clinical care
You will assess and monitor newborns, contribute to individualised care planning, recognise and escalate clinical concerns and work closely with the allocated midwife and neonatal medical team.
A key part of your role will also be supporting and educating parents and families, helping them build confidence in caring for their newborn.
This is a fixed term opportunity until June 2027, commencing in October. We have full time or part time opportunities, across a rotating roster, all shifts including night Duty.
New to Neonatal Care? We’ll Support You.
You don’t need previous neonatal nursing experience to apply.
We are looking for Registered Nurses with strong clinical foundations and a genuine interest in developing their neonatal knowledge and skills.
Successful applicants will be supported through a comprehensive orientation and education program, including:
- Supernumerary orientation
- Dedicated clinical education and support
- Neonatal assessment and monitoring
- Neonatal blood sampling and blood glucose monitoring
- Phototherapy
- Feeding and breastfeeding support
- Recognition and escalation of neonatal deterioration
- Ongoing clinical development within the maternity and newborn environment
This is an opportunity to learn in a supported environment while building valuable skills in an exciting area of nursing practice.
About You
You are an experienced Registered Nurse who brings strong clinical fundamentals, sound judgement and a commitment to safe, compassionate and family-centred care.
To be successful, you will bring:
- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
- Relevant nursing experience with strong clinical assessment skills
- The ability to recognise changes in clinical condition and escalate concerns appropriately
- A genuine interest in neonatal and postnatal care
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Effective organisation, prioritisation and time-management skills
- The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- A commitment to evidence-based practice, learning and professional development
- A compassionate and supportive approach when working with women and families
Experience in maternity, women’s health, neonatal, paediatric or postoperative nursing will be highly regarded, but is not essential.
Most importantly, you will be motivated to learn, comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team and excited by the opportunity to develop your nursing practice in neonatal care.
Why Join Us?
This isn't an opportunity where you're expected to arrive already knowing everything about neonatal nursing.
You'll bring your existing Registered Nurse skills, and we'll provide the education, clinical support and experience to help you develop further.
You’ll have the opportunity to:
- Develop specialised neonatal nursing skills
- Receive structured education and supported clinical orientation
- Work alongside experienced midwives, neonatal clinicians and educators
- Be part of an innovative model of care designed to keep mothers and babies together
- Support newborns and families at an incredibly important time
- Explore a new clinical direction within nursing
- Build experience that may support future development in neonatal, paediatric, maternity or women’s health nursing
If you’re an experienced Registered Nurse ready to develop new skills and explore neonatal care, we’d love to hear from you.
Bring your nursing experience. We’ll support you to build your neonatal capability.
